The suburbs still have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth. Want proof? Just look to the bottomless brood of bands feeding into Hamilton's musical community from city's outskirts. One such outfit making strides is Old Man Angst ---Ancaster natives Adam Carter and Greg Smith, Dundas' Andrea Fraser on percussion and Hamilton's Alison Novak on bass. It's no wonder each band on the bill for OMA's release party contains two members who attended Ancaster High. Carter sees the town as "a rock breeding ground". "There's nothing better to do in Ancaster except spend money at the movie theatre and the pizza parlour, or sit in your room and play guitar," he notes. "I chose the guitar, and so have countless others." The album, recorded at Ancaster's Valley View Studios with Jamie Andrew at the helm, is a colection of songs written over the last three years. Powerful and personal, the album melds elements of jazz, rock, metal, blues, funk, and classical. "The end result," Carter beams, "is a much stronger album than we ever could have imagined." Veterans of the all-ages circuit, Carter ponders the ability of OMA to change the scene they grew up in, one that now has a proliferation of new school punk and hardcore fans. "We don't limit ourselves by classifying our music as one particular style", he stresses. "The all-ages kids really love music -- that's something we have in common. But we deliver a powerful set of music that can be appreciated whether the listener was born in 1967 or 1987. Whatever a person's taste in music, they would be able to come out to one of our shows and have a good time." The Old Man Angst CD Release Party is celebrated with Wallowstarr an Fabulous Righteous (formerly Running On Empty) this Sunday, June 2nd at Casbah as an all-ages/licensed event. Doors open at 7p.m.; admission is $6 taken from Ric Taylor's MUSIC NOTES column in VIEW MGAZINE (may 30-june 5 2002 issue, pg. 14)
