Artist History
The music of Evergreen Dazed is a strange mixture of sensitive pop music in the mould of The Sundays, 10,000 Maniacs, the best mid period Fleetwood Mac, and electronic weirdness. The band formed in June 1991 in Leicester, England, when Elizabeth Bruce, a native of New York but studying English at a London University, answered an ad in Melody Maker placed by Mark Turrell. They recorded a four track demo together and when this failed to arouse any interest borrowed some eight track equipment and recorded and privately released their debut LP. This album is recommended if you can obtain a copy, as it contains some beautiful and haunting music, notably the opening track I Escape? and the outstanding Time. See Your Eyes has a feel of All About Eve in the vocals and instrumentation and is another excellent song. Both sides of the album end with a weird electronic piece, This Is Cindy Talking an adaptation of a fifteenth century Irish poem, and Escape Eye which is fact a feedback-laden backwards version of I Escape?. The band played three shows in San Francisco to promote the album, which had limited distribution in the States. In the UK, it was only available by writing to the band.
Evergreen Dazed was put on hold during 1993 and 1994 when Elizabeth moved back to New York. A copy of the album was sent to the Spanish label Elefant records and the result was 1995's Ocean Beach EP, consisting of three remixed tracks from the album. The band also have a few tracks on some Elefant Records compilations: Mexican Bandits on A Tribute To Felt, Time on Elefant Juice (which was given away with issue eight of the Spanish magazine Factory) and Thrown Away on Elefant Radio 68.2 FM Radio.
At the end of 1995, Mark relocated to San Francisco, finding the West Coast a more pleasant place to work. During the next 3 years, songs were recorded for an album This Is Our World And You’re Welcome To It. In July 98 they played their first live show for 6 years in San Francisco (with bassist Jeff Wachhorst) at The Bottom of The Hill, which previewed songs from that album. However it was decided not to release it at the time.
Mark had a family addition, Wilfrid, in 2000 which took up a lot of his time, but eventually recording sessions resumed in 2002. 11 new songs were completed and will be released in Spring 2003.
