Artist History
Red Tide was formed in 1993 by guitarist/vocalist Jeff Wu. The band started out as a thrash metal/hardcore outfit. Between '93 and '94 the band released two different demos of hardcore/thrash metal. In 1995 the band parted ways with bassist Jeff Bennett because of musical differences. The year of 1995 saw a drastic change for Red Tide, this is where Jeff Wu and drummer Justin Foley began to gain a strong interest in jazz music. The band recruited bassist Andy Dickins and Andre Otero (second guitar) for a studio session. The band released the groundbreaking "Expressions" demo in August of 1995. "Expressions" sought for a more progressive/metal/fusion sound. This was the beginning mark for Red Tide's experimental sound. Personal differences saw the release of Andre Otero. Andy Dickins became a full-time member of Red Tide after the studio sessions. Thus making Red Tide a trio. "Expressions" was sold worldwide with the help of the Internet. The tape sold approximately 500 copies with hundreds of bootlegs being peddled around to various metal heads. In 1996, after playing a few gigs in support of "Expressions", the band opted to bring in Ian Kauffman, a skilled guitarist who had the personality and musical openness the band was looking for. Red Tide played a few more gigs before they went back into the studio to record another demo tape. In July of '96 "Hybrid" was recorded. This demo tape sought for a more "brutal" edge. The tape was only pressed at limited quantities (only 230 tapes) but is still being bootlegged by various metal and hardcore fans. Finally in Nov. 1997, Red Tide released their debut CD, "Themes Of The Cosmic Consciousness". Red Tide has independently put out this CD on their own - investing their own time and money and basically putting all their effort into marketing, selling, distributing the CD without the help of a record label. "By far one of the hardest working bands in the underground." Presently Red Tide is concentrating on getting their music out to as many different kinds of music lovers as possible. From Phish fans to death metal fans to hardcore fans to Bob Dylan fans to jazz fans to metal heads - everyone.... The CD contains 8 songs of over 30 minutes of metal/jazz/hardcore music. This CD is by far the strongest release from Red Tide. Crossing over hardcore, brutal metal, odd rhythms, catchy choruses, jazz music, avant-garde, etc...creating something very innovative. The CD has generated tons of publicity for being one of the most unique sounding CD's in the metal/hardcore genre. The CD has been doing very well due to the help of the Internet, shows, distros, word of mouth, dedicated fans, etc... Red Tide's mission statement is to create some of the most innovative and unique pieces of music to entertain all music lovers. Red Tide's sound is always changing and progressing and never stagnating. You can be sure that every Red Tide release will be different than the last. |
