Artist History
Before lucking into the hip Salt Lake City band Groove Dilemma, Tony Semerad was a member of a few successful bands in New York City in the mid-1980s, including Counsel Says (later Nine Day Wonder) a semi-sensational power pop foursome regularly booked on the Manhattan club circuit during the so-called late New Wave era. Guitarist, songwriter and lead vocalist of Groove Dilemma, Semerad also plays bass. His influences range from Elvis Presley, The Beatles, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Burt Bacarach and Hal David, early punk such as the Sex Pistols, the Jam, Steely Dan, The Replacements, David Bowie, Radiohead and more. Originally from Japan, Angie Williams learned of Semerad over the Internet. When she joined she instantly brought hip, funky bass and backup vocals that pushed Groove Dilemma over the top. Her favorite influences are, among others, Earth Wind & Fire, The Brothers Johnson and Incognito.Darren Ewing became the drummer for Groove Dilemma due to a chance meeting with Semerad at a sushi bar in San Francisco. Ewing has over 23 years experience as a drummer/ percussionist bringing styles from his loves of Elvis Costello, Billy Joel, The Clash, Brian Setzer, R.E.M, Utopia, The Tubes -- as well as a passion for rock and roll of the 50's, Jazz of all flavors and Motown.Ewing forged a now legendary musical partnership with bass player Williams. Their devotion to complex rhythms and flair for dance music, soul and classic rock give Groove Dilemma an exciting and “giggable” feel. It has also driven Semerad into a frenzied period of new songwriting. |
