Artist History
Shrouded in secrecy, two figures clad in black cloaks are said to have formed Cruevo on May 1st, 1776 in the same tavern in Bavaria as the dreaded global conspiracy of the Bavarian Illuminatti. Armed with pitchforks, torches and, in one bizarre incident, a dogbeaver, the townspeople drove Cruevo into hiding for the next 224 years. After building a complex series of tunnels and vast chambers within the bowels of the earth, the imortal inner core of the group lay in hiding until the decline of humanity in wait to take vengence on the |

Press Reviews
"...Cruevo...take southern style sludge and combine it with that unmistakeable Oakland edge..." -Jay, Urban Guerilla Zine
"Cruevo smokes too much, drinks too much, and some would even say they jam too much. Of course anyone that would say that is completely out oftheir fucking minds, because it's all that jamming that has made Cruevo the leaders in the newest wave of bands to emerge from the East Bays DIY underground." - wethepunx.com
"If you're into stomping, brooding and heavy sludge doom, this might be the right record for you. This split between these two US bands will definately fulfill your dreams. This is, without any doubt, "heavy duty shit".
Coming forth from such bands as MEDICATION TIME and SQUAT, CRUEVO kick off this split with their obviously SABBATH influenced music. Three lengthy songs pass by leaving you with the impression that a steamroller has just run over you. However, although their sound is generally very crusty, sludgy and heavy, the band does not forget that music should also have some melody and as such we are also treated to groovier parts, but also to downright mellow melodic parts. This makes their sound much more enjoyable.
When it comes to the vocals, I guess the booklet says it just right. Somebody definately has throat problems. The extreme screams are perhaps what really gives the music its low and dirty feel. Very ruff and uncompromising stuff that definately makes me wonder how long someone can keep this up without really developing some serious throat problems.
Three piece band BRAINOIL close this split with a lot more songs in number, but a lot shorter in length. Playing more or less in the same style as their split brothers CRUEVO, their music is a little less harsh and more streamlined. More emphasis has been laid on SABBATHIAN groove but still don't expect happy stoner rock or anything (the vocals for one are just as messed up). All in all I find them the lesser of the two bands but only barely. Both bands simply do not escape one another much when it comes to quality and style.
It is interesting to note that TIM GREEN, who was also the engineer of the past 4 MELVINS albums, recorded the CRUEVO part of the split, while BRAINOIL's half of the album was recorded by NOAH LANDIS of NEUROSIS.
All in all this is some pretty slaying, low down and dirty sludge which will most definately appeal to any fan of let's say Electric Wizard or Weedeater." -Aldo Quispel, Doom-metal.c |
