PERFORMING SONGWRITER Nov/Dec 1999Top 12 DIY Picks ReviewKevin Jones has worked as a session player, composed music for film and video, and performed with the Northwest-based acoustic band 3 Track Mind. 3 Track appeared in the film Georgia as Mare Winningham's backing group. His latest solo release, Hester Street, feels like the work of a guy who's been there and done that, but who's still firing on all cylinders, always ready to lay down that next great track or write that next great song. And so he does. The title track takes its inspiration from a George Luks painting of a street scene at the turn of the century in NYC. Stylistically, he ranges from crisp, acoustic folk in "Send In An Angel," to pop grooves in "Sister Souls," to straight ahead, heartland rock with "I Want You." Jones' guitar chops take the spotlight in the instrumental "Jack's Blues."Lots of veteran music makers settle into predictable grooves, but Jones is the kind who's always looking for fresh inspiration, new challenges, and different directions. Those are all evident on Hester Street. - Neil Fagan SING OUT! Summer 1999 Kevin Jones offers up a dozen pleasing original tunes here, nearly all of them variations on the theme of love with a few visions and memories of friends. Jones self-produced this highly listenable CD and keeps the songs moving along without overshadowing his voice. He plays a warehouse full of guitars, along with three main backup musicians and a harmony singer who joins him on most songs. Some of the songs such as Sister Souls ver towards rock while others such as "Then And Now" sound soft and acoustic. His Lyrics are intelligent. - R.WarrSeattle Weekly - December 17, 1998KEVIN JONES - With a voice and lyrics to match the sweet strains of his guitar, Seattle's version of Jackson Browne, Kevin Jones is out supporting his latest CD Hester St. (Turn Records). The title track inspired by a George Luks painting of New York city circa 1905 and the record's 11 other folk-rock songs feature his writing with some lyrics by his wife, Jane. With both his group 3 Track Mind (which appeared in the Jennifer Jason Leigh movie Georgia) and with the Kevin Jones Band he's opened for acts such as Roseanne Cash, and John Hiatt. December's date at Madison's Music House features the full band and will probably offer a glimpse of his various guitars, including a custom built Hamilton 6 String acoustic. Opening the show is Relish with Dave Keenan, Dave Ellis, and Nova Devonie (formerly of Ranch Romance). - Roberta CrugerVictory Review February 1999This first solo CD by Kevin Jones and his new band is a thoroughly polished and impressive album, full of catchy songs and great musicianship. Jones is a founding member of the well-known Northwest folk trio 3 Track Mind, and his new project gives him more room to explore his remarkable talent and stylistic range as a songwriter, guitarist, and singer. The sound is centered on Jones' excellent acoustic guitar playing and singing (reminiscent of Bruce Hornsby, but clearer), and the band brings a new edge and drive, particularly the locked-in rhythm section of drummer Mark Mattingly and bassist Kim Brusco. On this solid foundation, Jones builds richly textured layers of guitar and vocals, assisted by Mike Mattingly's tasty electric guitar and Kari Sandvik's nuanced backing vocals. Jane Jones, Kevin's wife is the lyricist on several songs including two of the album's best, "Sister Souls" and "Then and Now" the latter which also features Kevin's breathtakingly beautiful vocals and guitar accompaniment. Other highlights are the slow, earthy grooves on "Sister Souls", the driving 12-string and sweet harmonies on "Whisper", the bright pop sound of "I Want You", and the always tasteful, sensitive playing of all the musicians. Highly recommended. (Richard Middleton)
