Grade: A
Drive By Punch's debut EP "Dear Flannnagan" is phenomenal and is a great addition to the current state of the punk scene. They come from Edmonton, Alberta, the small Canadian city that is most well known for producing the technical punk powerhouse Choke on Smallman Records. Drive By Punch seem to have learned a trick or two from Choke, but they have adopted a sound entirely different. When I hear the dual vocals, one part tortured throaty scream, the other restrained melancholy sing, I am reminded of the vocal power of Taking Back Sunday. Drive By Punch's musical foundation is much heavier, a mix of technical punk and layered emocore like Staring Back or Brand New. Stylistically, it's excellent, and while a lot of other bands are filling up this sing/scream genre, like The Beautiful Mistake and Senses Fail, I think Drive By Punch are by far the best of the lot.
There are three guitar players in Drive By Punch, so I don't have to explain that "Dear Flannagan" is an extremely guitar-heavy recording. All three guitars are usually playing something different to achieve an intricate textured sound. And with four of the five members participating in the vocals, they are creating as rich and full a sound as humanly possible. All six songs are amazing; this is minute for minute one of the best, if not the best, EP in my collection. I want a full-length, and badly.
