    Artist description
copper blue don't exist anymore. copper blue were a teenage band from newport south wales who decided they would make a band for no particular reason. they could not play they're instruments but they learnt to a bit.they're songs are often random with guitarry bits that aren't to complicated but sound good, its a little different, trying to be a few slightly diffenet genre's at once. i tried to get the sound of the police, the dynamics of the pixies and the sheer good songwriting of REM....post-lofi stadium teenage wank angst punk rock, yeah, that'll do. um, as for new (improved?) Copper Blue, well we'll see. i aint sure yet.

    Artist History
new years eve 1997 - after standing at the bar in the le pub for an hour i consume copious amounts of vodka and whisky and then set about explaining the details of my band "debaser`s" history to two of my wholly uninterested friends. after about half and hours of trying to remember names and exaggeration i collapsed in my own filth and stayed there for two hours. That sort of parrallels copper blue - it was great fun and then it ended suddenly and somewhat messily and we felt the after effects for some time. Any way for those who care heres the full story, or at least the way i remember it, of a humble little teenage band from newport. For as long as i could remember, which granted isn`t far, joseph was going on about playing drums. Funny then that almost directly after i had a guitar for christmas he got a lend of drum kit from his sister`s boyfriend`s friend, or something. we set about recording - before he got the kit we`d recorded with him playing biscuit tins. We formed a psuedo-band called "flid" and made a bunch of songs using the 4 chords i knew about the people we were pissed off with. we next played with stephen, a mate from school. he played the complicated bits in the manics songs we covered. he didn`t join however as he was in another band. we asked about in school for a bass player and ended up with a couple of offers for 2nd guitarist none of whom turned up. we got to know declan through dave who was one of the reluctant guitarists. we figured he would be an asset as his brother ran le pub, oh and he was quite good too. meanwhile me and joseph went to see Mansun in cardiff uni. there i met a girl by the name of natalie to whom we told we were in a shit hot band. this took a worrying turn when she phoned me up later wanting to come down and see our "shit hot" band. thus events which would lead to the formation of copper blue were set in motion by alcohol. we got dec to come around with mark, who pressed record, and practice some stuff the day before she and her mates arrived. we raided the manics` everything must go song book and came up with a set which included a death metal version of wonderwall and half a lemonheads song (i only knew half of it). the day which followed became known as black saturday. despite the horrors of detuned guitars and sheer lack of ability declan was now a member of the band as was stephen, whose other band had split up, or something. mark said he would buy a penguin shaped tambourine. soon i got a lend of a crusty old bass and bass amp from my brother`s friend. seeing as three guitarists was a bit excessive i opted to play bass, which meant that we now nolonger needed wouldbe bassplayer ryan. he subsequently bought his own bass and joseph let him down gently. i think we might have ruined his life. we wrote and recorded two songs "concrete bollocks" (written by dec) and "down" (written by stephen, dec and me). we renamed ourselves "debaser". shortly after stephen left, prompting a drunken declan to question stephen`s sexuality and promting stephen to not talk to him for months. joseph, dec and me went on and recorded about a million songs, the best of which we put together as an "album" by the name of "long ago in a garage far, far away". we played our only gigs to our friends in erika`s garage and joseph`s basement at house parties. we wrote our first proper songs "ode to me" and "gumbamuffin" towards the end of that summer. thomas had a brief stint playing keyboard as our advert in speed music for a singer who played guitar/keyboard heralded no results. when we got back to school we had kerry join us on vocals briefly, she sang gumbamuffin once then disappeared. john joined in september for a few hours after which we sacked him due to "creative differences". towards the end of the year kirk joined for a few successful practices. early next year i sacked him for practice non attendance. as i remember we were in tj`s, he came over to say hello and i replied by looking away and saying "nooo!" i think he got the message. later he told me why he never turned up though i don`t remember a fucking word. at some point joseph taught himself to play guitar pretty fucking well and bought one. he then became chief songwriter of the band. our search for a second guitarist ended when dec had the bright idea of asking his guitar lesson chum bhurret to do it. he came, we liked, he joined. his and dec`s styles contrasted greatly but worked really well - he was all lush picky bits and dec was spiky noise and strummy bits. we started knocking out proper songs and i started singing, which solved our other problem. we changed our name to copper blue when i brought a bunch of suggested names which were all album titles. the sugar album was a fave of mine. plus with the pixies revival debaser seemed a bit obvious. once we had enough songs declan got us a support gig with kane without telling us. rather than shit bricks about this we did a dress rehersal infront of friends in my garage. we started to get worried (or at least i did) the crowd for kane would find us too soft, so one practice i began screaming, often much to the dismay of the other band members. the gig ruled, apart from some scary old homosexual men who took a liking to bhurret. the next gig was a bit more frightening. it took place in le pub and seemed awful at the time but turned out ok really. at the one after that i vowed to stay sober onstage. it was a farce. we played in tjs through a toy PA to about 8 people supporting kerry`s mum`s karioke band, well it was for charity. we wrote more songs and played more gigs - notable amoung these were 29th october in le pub - our only headlining gig which saw us cover, awfully, just like heaven by the cure with dec drumming and joseph playing guitar, urrrgghhh - and the "youth connect" thingy in newport centre which we played last at (headline isn`t a term which applies here) to a about a million prepubescents all of whom left, leaving us with only dec`s brother and our old english teacher as an audience. we joined tj`s christmas gig line up, supporting jettison and the drains, about 4 people came, we brought most of them. the best, and as it turned out last, gig took place on 4th february 1999. we played a largely new set and kicked ass. some short time after we split up. after a really good practice dec told us he was going to play with giraffe. we didn`t try to disuade him or ask him to stay in copper blue as well, we just cryed judas and that was that. joseph, bhurret and me planned to carry on with a new drummer and joseph playing guitar, which may well have ruled, but it never happened. and that was that. bleeeuuuuuuuurrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! -jon 25/1/01
