Artist History
From his early days performing with notable San Franciscan musician John Cipolina (Quicksilver Messenger Service) to his ten years as guitarist for Bay Area Celtic-rock mainstay Tempest, Rob Wullenjohn has continued to push the limits of blues rock inspired music by blending music styles and instrumentation. Two years ago, following a successful North American tour, and performing in England, Wullenjohn decided to create a new band blending American blues and Celtic rock. The new band called BLUE ON GREEN performs a mixture of blues-rock, Celtic traditional, bluedgrass and even a bit of Hawaiian steel. |

Press Reviews
Published in SF Gate, by Shand Walton "[..]One of the album's highlights is the tune "Grass Attack," where the musician picks the main theme on banjo, then introduces a slide guitar call-and-response solo. You can count on this CD for a variety of styles and instruments fitting tightly together like a jigsaw puzzle." Published by Half Moon Bay Review; THE COLORS OF MUSIC04/04/01By: Stacy Trevenon Blue on green sound like nice pastoral shades, but they’re also the colors of the music that will ring out at the Old Princeton Landing Friday night. The blue might represent the blues and blues/rock that four-man Peninsula band Blue on Green renders in both hard-driving and slowly sensual style. The green might represent Ireland, from which comes the traditional Celtic airs and songs that they translate for a contemporary audience. The band renders its blues and Celtic airs with an instrumental core of electric guitars, acoustic bass, drums and keyboards. For even more colors and depth, they add a broad instrumental embellishment, including harmonica, bell, brass (sax and trumpet), fiddle, bodhran (an Irish drum), banjo and synthesizer. The result is a sound that seems almost too big for one band. Mostly instrumental, but with a few vocals by band founder Rob Wullenjohn, the songs encompass the style of the Grateful Dead, Irish reels and airs, folk rock, bluegrass and sultry to rocking blues. That range is hardly surprising, given Wullenjohn’s biography. He began his musical career performing with San Francisco legend John Cippolina (Quicksilver Messenger Service) and later segued into a 10-year stint with Bay Area Celtic-rock mainstay band Tempest. Along the way, he embarked on a successful North American tour and took in England’s stages as well. Two years ago, he decided to form a new band blending American blues and Celtic rock. Odd bedfellows as those styles may seem, they balance well, with Wullenjohn on guitar and vocals, drummer Mark Macario, guitarist Jeff Roberts and bassist Paul Clanon. The group’s 14-song CD, "Blue on Green," shifts effortlessly among its myriad styles. Such as the title cut, "Blue on Green," which has a sprightly bluegrass feel with appropriate instrumentation. Or "Blues for No-One" and "Jigsaw Puzzle Blues," which whip out sassy blues rock instrumentals. Still others call to mind the Grateful Dead, with harmony vocals and easy guitar lines that carry Wullenjohn’s light tenor. The Celtic genre is present with nimble fiddle licks such as those in "Grass Attack" (played by Bay Area fiddler extraordinaire Jon Berger) or soulful, haunting vocals (another Bay Area Celtic music notable, Lief Sorbye). There’s even a bit of Hawaiian steel guitar. Some of the songs are reinterpreted traditional tunes, and many are Wullenjohn originals. The band is featured at several summer music festivals in the Bay Area and beyond, including the Mill Fest in Tempe, Ariz., the Pacifica Fog Fest, Victorian Days in the Park in San Mateo, and the Dublin Irish Festival. The band also plays regularly in Bay Area clubs. The Old Princeton Landing can be reached at 728-9103. Published on Amazon.com by marta irvin; "If you enjoy a good time, want to dance a jig or rock out in one setting this is the album for you! Blue on Green has great variety, from traditional blues from back east with slide guitar to San Francisco style jazz/blues on to 10 years after style and finish off with good old celtic dance tunes. Also the Water is Wide has a gratefuldead feel. Enjoy! |
