Artist History
Cuba has given the world great rhythms, challenging dance patterns and unforgettable voices. The perfect blending of races and cultures has endowed the largest island of the Caribbean with a rich and complex musical tradition, kept alive and constantly renewed by its younger generations. This blend of vital instincts and carefully preserved experience, today finds its reward in a strong revival of the universal appeal of Cuban music. Azucar Negra brings together some of the most outstanding representatives both of this tradition and its new vitality. The youthful, yet already remarkably experienced core of the group consists of: Leonel Limonta: Director and Composer, Haila Maria Mompie: Lead Singer, Backed by a diabolically efficient rhythm section and horns drenched in Latin Jazz, Miss Mompie, as a lead singer, has the stage presence, sensuous movements and daring improvisations of the great salseras of the past, combined with the street wisdom and wit of the rap generation. The band's composer, Leonel Limonta, writes songs combining lyrics of meaningful content with the sophisticated rhytmical structures expected from the best of Cuban music. Theirs is a message of pleasure and movement, but also of consciousness and pride. You'll taste it when you hear them, they are sugar for the soul, and your heart will move your feet to their music. Azúcar Negra was formed several years ago when songwriter Leonel Limonta and singer Haila Mompié split from Bamboleo to form a new band. Fueled by one of Cuba's most imaginative songwriters and one of its hottest singers, the band was met with enthusiasm by audiences across the island and in Europe. Recently, they have come to the US and soon a recording will be available for their growing legions of fans. |
