System22- 6 Track Pre-Release DiscBound, Dive, ReleasedUntil You Say You Are, Freestate, Sunchaser - Courtesy of Chrissy Franklin. For those that don't know who System22 are, it's Cody Williams and Chrissy Franklin, both of whom have ties to Echoing Green. Cody has been doing remixes under the System22 name for a while now but we had, until now, not heard any original material. This is a CDR that Chrissy was nice enough to give to me so that I could hear what the two of them were up to and what we all had to look forward to. I must say, after hearing these tracks, we're in for a real treat! Bound is the first track. It starts out with a cute little answering machine message that Chrissy left for Cody. Then it kicks into a head-bobbin', booty-shakin' hardcore breakbeat track. This song is probably the most aggro-sounding on the disc. Chrissy's vocals are canned a bit but you can still make out the words quite clearly. You can also hear a bit of distortion in the bassline and melodies as well It's extremely energetic and mid-tempo (125 or so) and is probably the easiest track to work into a goth/industrial club setting. I understand this track is to be released ona different label than the rest of the songs here, and that it is actually to be a single as well. Cody mentioned that he also did a remix of this song and I look forward to hearing it cuz I can't sit still when it's on. Dive is a perfect trance song. It's flowing and hypnotic and also features some great vocals from Chrissy. She sings "falling quickly- will you catch me?" over and over. It works great with the music. This song may remind some of Delerium in parts. However, I think it stands on it's own as original and quite beautiful. There's lots of breaks and melodic silent parts that build up into a frenzy of tasty trance bliss! Released is a track that you might expect to heararound 3AM while you're zoned out on something in somedark warehouse. Really! It's very atmospheric andhypnotic trance. But at the same time it's stillenergetic and makes you want to move. Chrissy's vocalsare great as well. She sings in some parts. Andtowards the end she speaks a bit as well. It's a very sensual song. I'm not sure if that was the intention, but it works. Until You Say You Are is the first single to be released on A Different Drum in the near future. This track features Reagan from Iris on vocals and it's simply killer! The original version, or at least the one that I have, is almost 8 minutes of addictive trance. It starts slowly and builds up for 3 minutes, then we finally get to the vocals. And as you'd expect from Reagan, they're very well done. They are not as loud and upfront as are most of the vocals on Iris tracks. Rather, they are down in the mix a bit and are used more like another instrument rather than the focal point of the song. But still, you can hear them well and tell that it's Reagen. Overall, this is one of my favorite tracks on the disc, even though it would have been nice to hear Chrissy's voice somewhere in there too. Freestate is the track most have probably heard by now. It was released on ADD's Too Good For Radio compilation. It's another very hypnotic track that is also perfect for a spaced-out "trance-dance." The music is upbeat and Chrissy's vocals are again very haunting. She sings "Close your eyes and take my hand" and from there she takes you on a journey to a musical paradise. And even though the song is 9 minutes, you find yourself wanting more. Sunchaser features another guest vocalist. This time, it's Joey B from Echoing Green. And this song is really an electronic epic. It's got many different elements to it. From melancholy piano lines to upbeat vocal samples to passionate vocal choruses to kickin'drums , it's all there with lots of breaks as well. And let me tell you, this sounds nothing like the Echoing Green you're used to. Definitely not as pop-oriented. However, Joey's vocals do sound very good here and actually fit nicely. If you're like me, you've been waiting a long time for music like this. I used to love trance music so much but always felt that it lacked a musical soul. Well, Cody has given it one. It's great eletronic music that doesn't sound like it was cranked out by some machine. And for Chrissy to have a chance to be the main vocalist is a welcome thought as well. She proves that she can really hold her own. And the two of them seem to be a good fit. Her voice matches perfectly with themusic here. And it's about time! 9.5/10
