    Artist History
December 1999 - Friday 12th, first gig played at Gosford Hill School supporting 'Honey Tree'. Neil got his head shaved for this gig and it looked awful. 7 days later we made our first public appearance, played at The Jericho tavern which has since been closed down. February 2000 - Recorded 'Food' at 'Hats Off' Studios in Stonesfield. The song went on our demo. March 2000 - Returned to GHS for the soiree as a favour in exchange for this website. Then a week later we played the Charlbury Lock-In 24 hours after being asked! ~organisation!!!~ May 2000 - First gig at the Elm Tree on the 27th and also the first review we got. Published in the July 2000 issue of Nightshift magazine. See Below. On the 29th we made our contribution to BBC Music Live. A gig at 'The Star' in Woodstock. Played to quite a nice large crowd, which included the local pisshead! June 2000 - Played two gigs at The Pit in Witney in the same month! And another gig at The Elm Tree, the last before the promoter was given 48 hours to pack up and go! The Elm Tree is no longer a music venue! July 2000 - Didn't do much because we all went on holiday at different times. Practised a bit, extended our set. August 2000 - First gig 'out of town'on the 17th. Supported X-Hail at Kelly's in Leamington Spa. Hired a very nice tour van for only fifty quid but got paid pennies due to a poor turnout. We think we played quite well though! On the 19th, our first headliner. At the Pit in Witney and support was from 'National Scandal', a band playing their first gig and playing it well! Two days later, JUNK hit LONDON! Highest profile gig so far, at the Bull and Gate, supporting Linoleum who played at Reading this year. September 2000 - One gig only this month, supported 'Airport Tigers' at The Wheatsheaf. A New Venue which replaced The Elm Tree thanks to committed Promoter, Joal. October 2000 - Recorded the new EP at 24/7 Studios. Strictly no gigs in order to concentrate on rehearsing material up to recordable standard. November 2000 - Friday 17th was the proposed release date for the new Junk EP. Available at all gigs, mail order and Avid records in Oxford. It's now December 5th and it still ain't out, sorry. This was also the day of our worst ever gig, playing for free at the Pit with no support band, we all enjoyed getting wasted before playing though... December 2000 - Kicked off the festive season by playing arguably our best gig at the Bull and Gate. January 2001 - CD is finally released on Friday 12th January to coincide with a reviewed gig at the Wheatsheaf.

Neil Dalchau - Singer and Bassist. Has been playing bass for about 4 years. Influenced by Rage Against The Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Also plays guitar and a bit of piano. Alex Martin - Guitars. Has been playing guitars for about 4 years. Influenced by Jeff Buckley and Therapy. Likes to sing now and again and loves his 12-string acoustic. Katy Jarratt - Keyboards. Has been playing on keys for a bloody long time. Influenced by Elvis Costello and Stevie Wonder. Got grade 8 piano and all that. Alistair Street - Drums. Has been playing drums for about 4 years. Influenced by The Who and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Has been known to sing at a couple of gigs but this becomes a rarer sight since he has learnt how to not throw his drumsticks all over the stage.

    Press Reviews
Review from Nightshift of Junk Saturday 27th May 2000 - "Any band who starts their set with an extended funk jam would normally be writing their own death warrant, especially when they’re a bunch of skinny white Oxfordshire teenagers, and particularly when in the middle of all this the bass player starts trying to rap. But there’s a something a little unhinged about Junk. Like the way the buzzing keyboards are all taught and wired and you feel like the entire band is about to snap like an over-stretched rubber band. And there’s an urgency about them when they plough through a jazz-inflected funk-metal track. Each time you think they’ve finally lost it, wandering off on some seemingly interminable, indulgent jazz wankfest, they come back at you with a crunching stoner rock riff. They’re convincing enough but tend to come across as a bit confused at times. A little more urgency and a little less haste in future then, perhaps." Again from Nightshift of Junk Friday 12th January 2001 - "If nu-metal’s down-tuned guitars are getting right up your nose, or the New Acoustic Movement’s just too routine to wet your palate, then Junk could be the remedy you require. Apart from coming over a tad hollow on occasions (which should be sorted with time), Junk are a refreshing young four-piece with an accomplished singer. Swing-pop dominates, with funk and plank-spanking interludes as a delicious side serving. They even manage to squeeze in a rousing cover of Elvis Costello’s classic ‘Pump It Up’. And with a veritable smorgasbord of ideas at their disposal there’s no reason why they shouldn’t progress even further. Wonderful."
