Artist description
Mandylion has always been about the joy of playing live and developing our music interest into something original, but most of all having fun. The demo that we relesead in 2000 contains the best material of our early days. Many hours in the rehearsing place in an old engine shed have passed since, and we have developed our song writing skills. We have also become tighter and more secure as a group. When we first started we were mainly inspired by the likes of The Gathering and Theatre of Tragedy. We still are – but we have developed something original from exchanging ideas. Nowadays, we try to accomplish songs in the spirit of “Lost”, but taking the composing to the next level. We have fond our own style, but to us that does not mean it is not capable of progressing. We want our song writing to be complex and challenging and we always enjoy what we do. |

Artist History
The band Mandylion first saw the light of day in early 1999, at that time called Soulsick. The former band of Mattias Svensson disbanded and he was looking for a fresh new startwith fresh new people. He turned to Henrik Bergman, also looking for a fresh band. At that time, Henrik came to think of two other people, Emilia Franke and Andreas Pettersson, who had shown interest of playing the kind of melodious hard music Mattias and Henrik werelooking for. Said and done, Soulsick was formed. Only, one crucial detail was missing -abassplayer. In Karlshamn, where we all live, finding a bass player might be the biggestchallenge you will ever experience. The first concert Soulsick ever had was actuallyperformed without bass. Still working hard, after 5 or 6 months of searching they foundthe optimal fifth band member - Ola Olsson. Since we didn't have a bass player earlier,Ola is to be sure an original member and cornerstone of Soulsick. A big change since thenis that our former drummer decided to drop of in early december of 2000. Yet, only a fewdays after we found the ideal replacer. Markus Sjöqvist showed immediate interest and started rehearsing with Mandylion the same week. And now, with roaring engines, the Mandylionspace ship is heading for a bright future, aiming for the stars. The sun isn't setting for Mandylion yet. Will it ever? |

Press Reviews
SOULSICK - self-titled demo CD-R Rating: 9/10 I'm not sure if this release fits the format of Fortitude webzine, but regardless to any genres, SOULSICK is definitely an interesting band. Coming as a blend of alternative rock and progressive metal, this demo shows a great potential this Swedish band possesses. Add some great material, original ideas, good musicianship and clear production and you get an outstanding effort for open-minded individuals. In fact, I would characterize SOULSICK's style as "club music": stuff which is usually played in rock clubs nowadays and is easily perceived with a mug of beer. This CD-R features 4 tracks with overall lenght of 17 minutes, the opening one being an instrumental tune. By the way, it reminded me of early DIMMU BORGIR heavily mixed with alternative tendencies. Special mention should be given to excellent female vocals that doubtlessly are one of the most appealing sides of this effort. The last track features fierce growling male vocals which sound a bit irrelevant in the context of this genre, however they don't ruin the overall relaxing atmosphere. I am very pleased with what I heard on this CD-R and I'm sure you'll like it too if you aren't narrow-minded. I hope that SOULSICK will release their debut full-lenght in 2001./Krasniy |
