WELCOME the latest addition to the local English metal scene:
Burning Edge. This unsigned band comprises brothers Izad Kazran
(vocals, guitar) and Mohd Ezra (drums), and schoolmate Mohd Harith
(bass), all from Kuala Lumpur.
Burning Edge was formed way back in 1995 and although its members
are currently undergraduates studying overseas (two in Australia and
one in Canada), they’re still a band regardless, and recorded its self-titled
EP, with songs written and produced by the trio.
Listening to the five-track set is like a blast from the past; reminiscent
of Metallica’s post black album era and Megadeth. However, it’s nice to
know that they’re no carbon copy of either. Yes, you can accuse it of
being formulaic in the way it sounds, but these boys are solid musicians
and more importantly, they can rock!
The first song Last Memory, for example, opens with the sound of a train
charging full steam ahead followed by a pounding riff and Izad’s James
Hetfield-like vocals. Another important note about its offerings is that it’s
not simply straight-laced tunes. There are interesting stop-start executions
and compositional breaks in songs like Memory, Fear in the Eye and Thin Pride,
which starts off like a heavy metal standard but subtly injects a sinister riff
for extra dimension.
Then there’s the rock ballad-type, All Things Wrong, with a flourishing keyboard
arrangement occupying the background. If there are any complaints, Dear Love is
the only song that tends to meander. Other than that, the Edge has made a promising
debut.
Unfortunately, you’re not going to find the mini-album at your local music store and
you’re not going to see the guys live any time soon either (unless they come down to
do gigs between study breaks, that is). But the good news is that the Edge has a website
(www.burning-edge.com) and there are previews of each song on it.
