    Artist description
SPIRITS REJOICE is a free jazz quartet. Free enough to pick up a beat or a melody when it comes along or to let it pass by and move into some other, looser mode of expression – and jazz enough to acknowledge its roots in the North American power-freeform of the sixties – such as Albert Ayler and John Coltrane - and also the bluesy, driving swing of Charles Mingus. This said, though, it must be noted that Spirits Rejoice have their very own sound and musical language. The limits are set only by Duke Ellington’s classic definition of good music: ”If it sounds good, it is good”. Anything and everything can happen, and the recurrent motifs in the music are hooks, fragments, themes for improvisation rather than compositions as such. Most melodies are children of the moment which are brought up in a loving environment and then allowed to grow into something else. The core of this music is energy and improvisation, and the result is a jubilant celebration, full of joy, sorrow, anger and humour, as serious as your life

    Press Reviews
MAGAZINE GROOVE #1 2001:"Spirits Rejoice borrow their name from Albert Ayler, which gives a hint about what these four Swedes sound like. Jazz that is free, but in effective motion. The first half hour and the first three tunes are high voltage music that swings enormously. I love when the wind players 'get stuck' on a melodic fragment, just to release a catapult load of tones in perfect time that grab the listener on their way." - Peter Sjöblom
