Artist History
Sings Harry was formed in 1993 with the express goal of championing 20th century New Zealand vocal music. Sings Harry performs music from all countries and cultures but we take pride in the special emphasis we place on New Zealand works. Highlights to date for Sings Harry include a semi-finalist placing in TV1’s prestigious Showcase talent competition, a closed performance of Hear My Prayer, O Lord for Her Majesty the Queen, and various performing tours around New Zealand. Sings Harry has recorded for National Radio, Concert FM, and television. 2000 was a busy year for Sings Harry. A regional tour for Chamber Music New Zealand, CD recordings for the New Zealand Hymnbook Trust and Waiteata Press (the Listener described our premier recording of Gillian Whitehead's Missa Brevis as "... casts an almost holistic spell"), and a masterclass with former The Kings Singers member Bob Chilcott... 2001 also promises to be busy with guest performances in Wellington and Tauranga in two music festivals, and an emphasis on returning to Sings Harry's roots as a Wellington-based ensemble through more frequent performances in the Wellington region. Repertoire for 2001 includes William Byrd's Mass for Three Voices, Herbert Howell's Requiem Aeternam, Douglas Lilburn's Sings Harry song cycle, and a collection of other smaller pieces that cover a wide range of 20th century sacred and secular vocal styles. |
