Artist description
The four members originally hail from the Slavic Village area of Cleveland. Jack Rugan, the oldest at 38, is the primary songwriter and guitarist. His “little” brother Jerry, age 26, handles the drums, and on second guitar, there is Adam Zieleniewski, age 26 as well. The band recently added Joe Rivera,27, on bass. The name of the band was taken from an old Batman comic book, the story line being a take off of the “Paul is dead” rumor of 1969. Two characters in the story were named Saul and Glennon, an obvious rip-off of Paul and John. Jack has been a huge Beatles fan since the age of three – his mom bought him the “paperback writer” 45. |

Press Reviews
From the December 31st 2000 Cleveland Plain Dealer - Best Albums of 2000: 10. Saul Glennon Trio, "Music for Three Piece Quartet" (GDR). I can't get the XTC-ish "Emily Flower" out of my head. Ditto "Zeppelin's On," "Everybody Rise!" and the rest of the catchy, whimsical tunes on this charmingly lo-fi, wildly ambitious release from one of Cleveland's most promising bands. File under "baroque power pop," per the wishes of singer-guitarist Jack Rugan. From The 2000 year end issue of Scene Magazine - best local albums of 2000: 4. Saul Glennon Trio: Music for Three Piece Quartet (Gordon D) -- Slavic Village's Saul Glennon Trio plays what it calls "baroque-style power pop." While its songwriting sensibilities are often buried beneath off-key vocals and sloppy production, the band, which takes its name from an old Batman comic, writes songs with just enough hooks to suggest its latent talent. From the May 24th 2000 Cleveland Free times - album review: The Saul Glennon TrioMusic for Three Piece Quartet(G.D.R.)There’s no "Saul Glennon" in this trio, just 36-year-old frontman Jack Rugan indulging in an obscure Beatles joke that perfectly defines his psychedelic fixation. But except for the Apples in Stereo (see DISCourse) and maybe GBV, the Saul Glennon Trio make as much of their time-lapse tastes as any national act who still believe they are the walrus. Compared to the trio’s swirling hooks and punchy riffs, the Papas Fritas sound like small fry, the Olivia Tremor Control like tremulous twerps.Or at least they would if leader Rugan had the technical grasp to match his musical reach. The found-sound interludes and layered harmonies are worth all the time he spent getting them right. But the muddy recording levels, uneven lead vocals and monotonously tinny/fuzzy guitar settings wear out their welcome long before track 20. In the best possible scenario, this will stand as a blueprint for the great national debut the trio has in them. Expect all the dunderhead lo-fi snobs to then declare this DIY disc the group’s "real masterpiece." Grade: B PLUS – Franklin Soults |
