Press Reviews
You've seen him play guitar in the Assponys. But have you heard his solo material? Tip SheetOne of Cincinnati's BestNominated for best local songwriter for the layers of emotion, depth and muted colors that form the style and timbre of a songwriter sometimes better known as "that Ass Ponys guitarist." File BetweenWill Oldham and Billy Bragg The Making of an ArtistIn addition to his work with the Ass Ponys, you may have spotted him performing with Ruby Vileos, and possibly caught a rare appearance with the Maya Unsemble. So at the least, you're familiar with Bill Alletzhauser. But those who've had the privilege to hear his solo material know that the intimate performances paint a more detailed picture of Bill Alletzhauser the artist—and not just the musician. Caught Live and on TapeAlletzhauser's songs show a wise perspective, but captured with what I can only call a "boyish" vulnerability, both live and on recordings. On his rare tapes, a keen proficiency shines through as each song has him utilizing a number of different instruments. As a songwriter, Allezthauser shows he is a master of the craft, in the vein of an Elliot Smith. A truly versatile player, he shows a sensitivity to his surroundings, putting forth sounds and structures that are entirely complementary. — Mike Shottelkotte Bill Alletzhauser of The Ass Ponys and Ruby Vileos has a new project under the guise of Lance Ohio. Released through Web site/label Royal Fuzz, Perfect Dreams is a collection of Alletzhauser's songs presented in lo-fi fashion and featuring guests like drummer Dave Chamberlin, fellow Pony Dave Morrison and singer Niki Buehrig. If you've ever had the privilege of seeing the loose collective The Hiders, you'll get a sense of some of what Lance Ohio has to offer. Sparse and occasionally ethereal, Alletzhauser's songs breathe with an off-kilter, rootsy aftertaste. With songs spanning from the dreamy lilt of "Most Bitter Pill" to the aching, Neil Young-like softness of "Let's Forget," Perfect Dreams is a gentle, distilled collection of fractured lullabies that showcase Alletzhauser's unique vision and caustic songwriting skills. |
