    Artist History
Brett Milano of the Boston Phoenix has described Patty Giurleo's songwriting style as "an occasional vocal resemblance to Joni Mitchell, and a preference for the floating, not-quite-pretty tunes that Mitchell wrote in her post-waif, pre-jazz period". Giurleo released her newest CD, entitled Ensemble, in May 2001. The nine song CD takes a turn in a jazzier direction, featuring the rhythm section of acoustic bassist Jon Frederick (Lemonpeeler, db Leonard), and drummer Scott Eisenberg (Billy Bragg, Dr. Didj, Meg Toohey.) Ensemble also showcases guest performances by tenor saxophonist Timo Shanko (The Slip, The Fully Celebrated Orchestra), pianist Dan McLoughlin (the Push Stars, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones) and guitarist Noah Maltsberger. Combining both original compositions with jazz standards, this CD creates a relaxed, contemporary folk-pop atmosphere with selected elements of jazz. The most up-tempo song, "I Love You so I Leave You Alone", fits squarely in a pop format, while the classic standard, "I Fall in Love Too Easily", is a romantic jazz lament. In 1994, Patty emerged as a singer-songwriter with the release of a two-song, live acoustic seven-inch single on vinyl for Mag Wheel records. She was named by Musician magazine as one of the years top ten unsigned artists, and received a rave review by Charles Aaron (editor) in SPIN magazine. In 1998, Patty recorded her first full-length project, Longtime, released on the Cambridge-based independent label, 449 Records. Dan McLoughlin recorded this 11 song CD at Fort Apache Studio, in Cambridge, MA. This limited edition release gives an intimate and revealing example of her unique and honest songwriting style. In April 1999, Patricia Giurleo was nominated for Best New Local Act in the WFNX/Boston Phoenix Best Music Poll. She was featured on the cover of the Arts Section in February 1999. She performed at the legendary Club Passim as a regular part of the Cutting Edge of the Campfire Series, as well at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival as part of its New Artist Showcase. The Boston Phoenix named the debut CD Longtime as one of the years' 10 best regional releases. Recently she has received airplay on large college and commercial alternative stations such as WFNX 101.7 FM, Emerson College's WERS 88.9 FM, and has performed live both solo and with her ensemble on Tufts WMFO 91.5 FM. The Patty Giurleo Ensemble has been included in numerous Internet sponsored events. She is currently living in New York City and attending the New School University's Bachelor of Fine Art program in Jazz & Contemporary Music. She has performed with national and regional artists such as John Gorka, Janis Ian, Ellis Paul, Dave's True Story, Leni Stern, The Fully Celebrated Orchestra, and Lemonpeeler.
