Press Reviews
RADIOWAVE "Journey Thru Oz!" SpaceForMusic.com Records D.A.M CD - released 3/05/01. This is one of the musical suprises of the year. "RADIOWAVE", aka Greg Paugh, has created what I believe to be the best new release for 2001 and probably the best new artist as well. His debut release, "Journey Thru Oz!", was created totally with guitars and guitar synthesizer. Only about 3 of the songs has an identifiable guitar sound. The tracks on this CD have the feel of 70s space music, but a sonic quality of this century. Recorded in his home studio, without the use of sequencers, "RADIOWAVE" creates a sound that is very comfortable and inviting. The flowing results of recording to disk/tape without sequencers gives a warm natural feel to the whole CD. There is a familiarity to the music, but Paugh has also chiseled out his own sound too. Even though this is a debut recording, the expertise and seasoned feel of the songs show that Paugh has years of experience on the guitar. I was blown away when I first heard "RADIOWAVE" and then realized it was his first recording. He has a musical sensitivity of an artist with many CD releases under his belt. "Journey Thru Oz!" has 9 tracks, right at an hour of music. The second song, "Apparition", has been in the top 40 on the ambient chart at mp3.com since the CD was posted at the beginning of March. Within the first month of "RADIOWAVE" being at mp3.com he has already had over 10,000 downloads and listens, bringing him over $400 in payback money. This is nearly unheard of for a new, unknown artist. His music merits this success though. His sound reflects influences from the likes of Tangerine Dream, Mike Oldfield, Pink Floyd and King Crimson. The last song on the CD, "The Other Side Of Reality", has some sampling humor and shows his love of space rock music. His soaring guitar and drums taunt the sampled coliseum audience creating a humorous moment for the listener. I have listened to this CD no less than 25 times since releasing it on "Space for Music". I am excited to hear this kind of quality coming from new artists and look forward to "RADIOWAVE's" next release. I highly recommend "Journey Thru Oz!" as it has been a shining beacon for me in the past month. If I had "5 GOLD STARS" they would go to this guitar synth artist, "RADIOWAVE", for creating a top notch addition to the space music genre. Check it out. - Tony Gerber (Space for Music) |
