    Press Reviews
Melody Maker, November 24, 1999:- Pool "Pretend" (Little Red Fox Records) 3.5/5 Tunes! Words! Graft! Weller-isms! Nice work, young man.Daily Express, November 27, 1999:- And finally, Pool deliver the lovely Pretend, a harmony-laden, organ-filled tune that really shuffles along. Enjoy.Footloose, November 24, 1999:- They've been around for two years, but Pool have finally released their debut 45 this week. "Pretend" is a mixture of everything, so let's face it, you're bound to like it. It's rock'n'roll, it's sexy music and hits you right where it hurts (well, your ears will appreciate it!). So, if you're listening out for something new, dive into Pool. It'll be the most refreshing thing you ever do.Jewish Chronicle August 11,2000:- Pool are a reminder of the days when Brian Epstein trawled the port for the finest catch of British bands the 1960s ever saw.Their debut album, "Popgun," comes packed with the sort of three-minute slices of powerful pop which typified Merseybeat and, yes, it can still reach the parts other, more complex music can't."Pretend" is a little gem, built around a Beatlesque chorus, underpinned by a greasy organ and driven ever upwards by a passionate, spat-out vocal. "Lovetheme" finds Pool in yearning mode and they can even do acoustic and reflective, as "Talk To Me" shows.Throwbacks then, right down to "Don't Put Me Down," the sort of gritty, r'n'b snarl the Beatles cut their teeth on and were playing that fateful lunch time session at The Cavern when Epstein wandered in and discovered the boys who would change pop culture forever.Pool aren't in the Fab Four league - who is? - but if you've ever felt rock as lacked something since those heady days, then they're well worth investigating. Jewish Chronicle, December 10, 1999 - Ah, the seductive power of a guitar band steeped in the values of power chord/riff/refrain. Pool sound like The Jam playing The Small Faces songbook on "Pretend" (Little Red Fox) and the water is indeed lovely. Jump right in.Harborough Mail, November 25, 1999:- Single of the week? Pretend by Pool. They manage to take the sounds of the 60s (early Beatles, rock n roll et al) and give them a contemporary twist. Definately one to look out for. Peoplesound review:- The appeal of the four-piece rock /pop outfit Pool owes a lot to the upbeat mood of their songs. Pretend is about as hyperactively happy as they come, a powerful pop melody spliced with well-worked harmonized backing. She’s Going Nowhere recreates the style perfected by the Beatles in Nowhere Man, and relies on a similar interaction between verse and chorus. These two songs are proof enough of the bands determination not to confine themselves to just one style of playing. The key word here is ‘catchy’. Do not listen to either song more than once unless you are prepared to be humming them again...
