Artist History
A lot has happened to Christene since she left her home town of Modesto, California, culminating in her recent move to Nashville, where she hopes to take her already active music career to the next level. She has already begun to garner the kind of attention reserved for veterans in the music business.
“LeDoux may be new to the music industry but her talents would make you believe otherwise” said San Francisco Art Magazine writer Art Jefferson, after reviewing a 2001 appearance at a popular Los Angeles night club ‘The Mint’, “To call Ledoux a storyteller is to understate her skills. She is an artist creating exquisite imagery through song. Her entire performance was pure art, her voice of angelic purity.
The lyrics of Christene LeDoux are so clear and vivid that with each note and tone she emits, a detailed form seems to take shape in our minds. Playing songs that included "The Entertainer" and "Half Moon Bay", she also demonstrated her virtuosity that makes her such a superlative entertainer. Through every song the crowd was entranced, the aura of their love and appreciation a palpable presence in the club. This is what the experience of music is all about”.
Christene, a three-time Tucson Folk Festival songwriting finalist, is quickly making her presence known in the folk circuit. With her real-life story songs and warm, personable presence on stage, Christene has sold more than 10,000 demo CD’s in the past year from her live performances alone. A 5-song compilation of tracks from her upcoming CD, “little lighthouse”.
An independent musician, handling all her booking and management under her own label, “Little Pumpkin Music”, LeDoux spent her nights burning CD’s while spending her days performing at San Francisco’s Ghirardelli Square & Pier 39. Sometimes singing over six hours at a time, braving the City by the Bay’s notorious moody weather, she sold her music sampler and built a 4,000+ name mailing list, with fans reigning from around the world. In her “spare time”, Christene traveled the United States performing in Clubs and Caf’s and participating as an invited guest at various music festivals, including SXSW, Tucson Folk Festival, San Francisco Folk Festival, Berkeley Free Folk Festival, NEMO Conference in Boston, Nashville New Music Conference, LadyFest South in Atlanta, Georgia, NowhereXNowhere in Chico, CA, DewyBeach Music Festival in Deleware, MidPoint Music Festival in Ohio, Joni Mitchell recognized, ‘JoniFest’ & The Recording Academy’s (San Francisco Chapter) Holiday Mixer Annual Party 2000.
Her new CD, “little lighthouse” recalls characters she’s met and lessons learned through her odysseys, in the United States and beyond. The 32 year-old, former San Francisco resident, has sampled life in every corner of the United States. She left her hometown of Modesto, California in 1991 to pursue what she thought to be a volunteer job in Ghana, Africa for two years. On her way to training in Washington DC, Christene’s $400 auction-purchased car broke down at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Three days later, it was clear her car was all but gone, and an unexpected adventure beginning.
After a six-month stint as an airplane fueler at ‘Grand Canyon Airlines’, LeDoux embarked on what would be a four-year journey through the United States, taking any job she could get to make ends meet; writing sports in Flagstaff, Arizona, raising huskies in Alaska, building lipstick holders in Connecticut and photographing skiers and selling real estate in Colorado. Along the way she fell in love, only to have her heart broken. While picking up the pieces, Christene also picked up the guitar. She decided to head back to California, only this time armed with a new love.
In 1995, landing in San Francisco, Christene picked up some more work as a nanny, clown, children’s party planner & dog walker. After running into a friend at a party she was working as a clown, she was encouraged to take off the wig for good and attend a local music school, ‘Blue Bear School of Music’. Before she knew it, she was performing in workshops with the former bandleader of “The Tubes”, Bill Spooner. It was at the school, Spooner saw something special in Christene and encouraged her to explore her vocal and writing talents further. It was after her experience with Spooner, her love affair with music was no longer an affair but a commitment. She wrote her first song soon after, titled "Do You Ever Fall" a haunting ballad about letting go and moving on. While out watching a friend play at an open mic, Christene was talked into to playing and singing her song. It didn't take long for her to figure out the stage was where she felt the most at home. The rest is history.
You can expect to see a lot more of Christene LeDoux in 2003, all over the United States & Europe, as she has made touring her full-time, “day job”. Commenting on her ‘jack of all trades’ lifestyle, Christene reassures us she’s in for the long haul, “As long as I can breath a note, I’ll be on the stage. If it means being a clown at children’s parties in the meantime, I’ll do it. Just let me sing after the party…better yet, during!” Something tells us Christene won’t be punching the clock, or is that shaping balloons for long. And definitely no more lipstick holder building for this talented artist.
More:On February 14, 2000, Christene was featured on an episode of CBS’ 48 HOURS and recently, was filmed for an upcoming show, “The Aspiring Artist”. She is being featured on numerous radio shows across the nation, including online web-based shows. In Nov. 2000, Christene was awarded “Best Song and in Feb. 2001,“Best Performer” at NCSA’s (Northern California’s Songwriter’s Association) songwriting competition. In the Fall of 2001, she was asked to perform at the prestigious NCSA Annual Conference. In March 2001, Chris embarked on a three-week solo tour of Italy…as well as giving workshops throughout the Italian school system on “following your dream”. |
