Artist description
Formed in 1996, amusia is an original pop-rock band from Boston comprised of vocalist Ruth Peterson, acoustic guitarist Todd Russell, drummer Matthew Russell and guitarist David Sella.amusia; Pronunciation: ( A-myOO'zE-u) -n. Med. the inability to produce or comprehend music or musical sounds. This may very well be the medical definition of the band's name, but it is far from the concept of what the group is all about. amusia is a song writing band that loves to produce. It's goal is to preserve and maintain the meaning of "song"... that is to say, "pop-radio" songs. Their music is a combination of warm, "rock-pop" and funk that provides a solid bed for Ruth's unforgettable melodies. amusia is musical! In July 1997, amusia released a four song EP which sold more than five hundred copies in Massachusetts and Connecticut. The opening track, "Like a Bullet," appeared on a national compilation released by The Citibank Visa Corporation. As a result the song received airplay in New England and around the country. In June of 1998, amusia began recording their first full length record. Produced by Francisco Lugo (Peter Mulvey, Groovasaurus) at Howz Media Workshop, MA, "Forever Ends" is the much anticipated result of one year's efforts. This nine song CD was released on October 12, 1999.During the mixing stage of this recording, bass player Mike Powers left the group. Though one replacement came and went, amusia's scrutinous search for a bassist ended this past August with Miami native, Michael Calienes. amusia are feeling better than ever, and their future continues to brighten. Regional newspapers and radio stations have recognized the band favourably. The group has returned to playing live shows in New England and New York, and in the process, has begun to spark management company and Indie label interest. amusia can be found online at www.amusia.com. |

Press Reviews
Northeast Performer February 2000Forever Ends finds singer Ruth Peterson singing with a subtle passion that recalls Natalie Merchant and the more introspective side of Alanis Morrissette. Her lyrics are both confessional ("Maybe when I see you all my will is gone... maybe all I feel is the space between us") and burning ("I want to be the ocean... when you go under I enter you") while always maintaining an emotional honesty. The band behind Peterson plays a quiet combination of pop and roots rock that fits her delivery perfectly. Guitarists Todd Russell and David Sella use tasteful arpeggios and acoustic strumming to produce a beautifully textured and layered, yet subtle sound, while bass player Michael Calinens' bass locks in the groove with Matt Russell's nimble drumming.Highlights are aplenty, but standouts are "Go Under," a fresh and lyrically heavy love song and "Lovewash," which features superb slide guitar by Sella.Forever Ends is a rare album that shows a new face with every listen.-Peter Valle |
