Artist History
Troxem is the project bandname of songwriter Tibor Ouyang who was born in New Westminister, B.C., Canada on 04/28/67 but has lived in the United States since the age of one. He first moved to Flint, MI where he was raised on radio, LPs and 8-tracks until he was 13, when he moved to Fountain Valley, CA. He attended Fountain Valley High School for his freshman and sophomore years, but returned to Michigan and finished high school there attending Cranbrook where, when not studying, he would jam with others interested in music. His energies became focused on developing his singing and guitar playing and he formed a cover band called Vertigo. The band primarily played 70s and 80s music influenced by James Taylor, Jim Croce, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Genesis, the Eagles, Foreigner, Boston, Led Zeppelin and U2 to name a few. In his senior year, the band became quite popular locally performing regularly before crowds of 500 people or more at school events and local functions. Tibor attended college at Michigan State for a year and a half. It was here that he became more serious about songwriting and took classes in composing and arranging. During this time, Tibor would perform in the dormitory cafeteria, at talent shows and with a local gospel band at a large Baptist church. Shortly thereafter, Tibor transferred to UCLA where he joined bands performing a variety of music in the soft rock, folk, hard rock, and alternative genres. While attending UCLA, Tibor lived in Westwood where he collaborated with some local musicians who helped to expand his musical horizons with their own blend of original blues/funk/rock. Later, still in college, he moved to Venice Beach where he lived in a Dodge van and experienced another side of life socializing with the riff raff, deadheads, tourists and boardwalk merchants while performing regularly at open mikes and coffeehouses throughout West LA and Hollywood. After graduating from UCLA with a degree in Sociology, Tibor started the band Skin & Bones playing all original material in a hard rock vein. They played the N. Hollywood and Valley club scene including the former FM Station, Mancini’s, Lady Jane’s, Bourbon Square and The Way. Notably, in 1997, Skin & Bones was featured on a public access TV show called Georgetta Presents which airs to a substantial viewing audience in the San Fernando Valley. In the Fall of 1997, Tibor left Skin & Bones due to collaborative differences and was anxious to explore writing in a more current vein. Shortly thereafter he moved to Orange County where he met Joel Saluta, a classically-trained violinist who was suffocating in a cesspool of stagnation. One fateful night, Joel dreamed he was being chased by a dancing bearded hippo in a bikini who threatened to get naked unless Joel played bass for Troxem - he is now the bass player (the bearded hippo turned out to be Tibor during a night of drunken revelry). Finally, there’s “Phil”, aka Alesis SR-16, who assumed the role of drummer because of his ability to show up for practice and stay sober. Although Phil is precise, he is somewhat mechanical and lacks feeling so Troxem, after many tryouts with less reliable substitutes, is still looking for a suitable replacement. Currently, Troxem performs their original material at local Orange County venues, but is always looking to expand their itinerary. When not performing, Tibor spends much of his time writing new material for the group. The music of Troxem can be described as folk/rock/country/alternative/blues with the emphasis always on the musical, melodic and lyrical content rather than on genre classification. |
