Press Reviews
L Ray Robinson MP3 review by Alex of Raw 42, may 4, 1999. A class above the rest in composition, production and sheer style. who are you mr. robinson? you need to spread this music to the masses...
velveteen just flows. a smooth opening reminds me of the sade style. certainly not a jazzy or bluesy number, but drum 'n bass which springs to life with the frantic drum loop while never losing it's ambient feel. very professional production and the combination of analog sweep style sounds with mellow harmonic chords never sounds contrived, rather smooth and elegant. getting much more funky in blow my mind, l ray robinson has the two most funky elements in music in perfect harmony, a wah wah guitar and human beat box.. technicalities aside, this track just grooves with a 70's tv show flavour. vocal samples seem carefully chosen and mixed so fluently. excellent funky track with 70's retro edge. groovebox beats has a deep, booming 808 drum track and harmonious mellow organ pads to create a fluid backdrop for the melody composed of short synth stabs. this works well to add a danceable edge to an otherwise delicate song. short and simple composition that leaves nothing to chance, a sign of maturity. my personal favourite is ABC announcers, a rather funky number interspersed with profanity laced out-takes , supposedly from newscasters. not a song you'd find on the radio but entirely commercial if the language wasn't so profane. excellent drums and an extremely danceable backbone of bass/organ make this song a standout. overall, smooth, sleek, professional and and groove oriented. highly recommended.
