    Artist description
Shanynn was signed with Motown when she was 18... there's a reason you've never heard of her; it never got released! Disenchanted with pop girl groups, she decided to move out to New York and write her own material. It's all one big learning process.... Her genre falls loosely into Power Pop Alternative and her style has been likened to Siouxsie and the Banshees, Paula Cole, and Concrete Blonde. She's currently working on a more trip-hop oriented project....

Critics's Corner Forum Archives - kvhMar 31, 2001 at 12:05:47 Shanynn kicks some serious NY,NY moody hip-hop ass...listen. /artists/219/shanynn_raigh.html "another glass of wine" new york, new york. if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere,it's up to you....shanynn....shanynn...i wish that i could make it down to ny sometime soon and catch this show....seems to me that it would be a good one. bluesy, moody, anxious, agitated and very cool stuff...like a sane fiona apple, or a pretty paula cole, or a filthy dido...lots going on hear/here and i would suggest you simply listen to the song rather than listen to me blabber on and on about it. well structured and arranged...i'm digging these melodies right off the bat, which is unusual for someone with as thick of a skull as myself...."swallow down the pain"....allright! words of wisdom fer sure..string sequences and hip hop beat go perfectly with shanynn's wicked, badgirl vocals...she sounds a bit like siouxie to me, of banshee's fame....but this song is better than anything that that band put out(with the exception of "kiss them for me"...one of my all time favorites....perhaps you should cover that one, my dear?...for me?) swallow this pain.... "living in the grey" - another blue/minor-key piece. more intresting sequencing and the chick's voice is remarkable. the producer cleans up the vocals on the chorus and...well, man, clean up the vocals on the verses as well...it sounds like she's singing from the inside of a car trunk, wrapped in an oriental rug, doused with lighter fluid....why? her voice is pretty perfect if you ask me...you don't have to effect the hell outta it like they do for Bono for chrissakes...you know who else comes to mind here...'concrete blonde' specifically their album 'the bloodletting', all about vampires and other living dead creatures of the night. she has that evil spin to her songs that force this obvious comparison. 'the bloodletting' is a favorite cd of mine...."joey", "caroline".....excellent cd....pick it up..and order this shannyn cd as well....ok? "the grind" - i like this beat alot....faster and more energetic than the other two, which were pretty marvelous themselves......another great song...3 for fucking 3....did you write this stuff dear? this goes to my 2 watt radio station and near the top of my mp3 list...DL it in hi-fi for the full "chick-from-NY" effect...kurt
