Press Reviews
The music of Citezen is described on the mp3.com homepage
/artists/228/citezen.html as
"experimental ambient soundscapes...concentrating on
experimental soundscapes and abstract melodies." I
found the music here to be very worthwhile. Gary
Spence, creator of Citezen dabs from both a retro and
more inventive sound palette for music that can be
listened into or enjoyed in the background. Unlike
some unfortunate experimental soundscapers, Spence
seems to have a firm grasp on creating "techno" as
much as expressing a pure sensory sound environment,
as evidenced distinctly on "Calatrava." This ability
to harmonically present a "groove" with completely
novel sounds as well as the ability to morph into
abstract environments makes me want to compare Citezen
to artists such as the Orb. In fact, Citezen's alter
ego is "tristen polar"
/artists/218/tristenpolar.html,
featuring smooth microhouse which dabbles with glitch
and crackle at times. There is a liquid quality to
Spence's output generally; things transform quietly
and delicately, though there is always plenty to fill
out your ears. I'm not sure there is a need to keep
these two sides distinct and separate outside the mp3
genre search engine -- I could forsee a set by this
artists seesawing between funky exercises such as
"drumtools1" and then expanding into the more chilled
out work of Citezen, or even combining an epic track
or two journeying through all sonic possibilities on a
full length release. My favorite of the Polar page
might be "penpek," which realizes a voice that is
dubby, atmospheric, and twerpy, yet maintains a
beautiful liquid groove. There really isn't a weak
track on either page, so point your browser and enjoy.
