Majida began her career in music when, at the tender age of five she danced and sang on the stage at Brooklyn Academy of Music with The Izulu Dance Theatre. Under the tutelage of South Africa’s singing sensation and recent star of the Lion King, Thuli Dumakude, Majida’s career in music and dance took center stage. For the next 13 years she performed with a several professional dance/theatre companies of which included The Calabash Dance Company, Sabar-Ak-Ru-Afrik Dance Theatre and Maimouna Keita School of African Dance. With Maimouna Keita School of African Dance, Majida traveled to Senegal West Africa where they performed for top government officials who were excited to see African American youth perform their traditional dances. The officials were extremely impressed because they danced as if they were born in Senegal. After this exceptional experience Majida began to thirst for more variety in her dance technique and began training at The Ifetayo Cultural Arts Center. Here Kwayera Cunningham former principal dancer with Jubilation Dance Co. took Majida under her wing and began training her in Modern, Jazz and Ballet dance techniques. Majida went on to perform with Ifetayo as a principal dancer from 1987 to 1989 when she left the company, with their blessings, to perform as a dancer/choreographer for Island Records recording artist Patra. . Majida performed with Patra for 2yrs traveling all over the world. Being on the road gave Majida a whole new perspective on the music business and ignited the beautiful voice that has come to be known as SkyeBlu. As Majida was working and developing as a dancer she lived with her Mom and attended school in Park Slope Brooklyn. It was here at P.S.39 that Majida was introduced to choral singing. She learned about vocal harmony and was exposed to a variety of music styles. Majida performed with the P.S. 39 chorus at Radio City Music Hall, Regis and Kathy Lee Show and sang The National Anthem at several New York Mets games. But it was in Junior High School 51 Chorus that Majida was keeping a secret. She was |
