Artist History
Jazz guitarist John Stein was born and raised in Kansas City where he took up his instrument at a very early age. His talent for and love of music eventually brought him to Boston and the renowned Berklee College of Music where he has guided aspiring musicians for many years. A familiar voice in the New England jazz scene, John has performed both as a sideman and as a leader with some of the region's finest players, including performances with John LaPorta, Bill Pierce, and Bob Freedman among many others. He has performed onstage with some of the world's finest jazz musicians, including Lou Donaldson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Idris Muhammid. For many years, John has performed weekly, accompanying some of the Boston area's premiere jazz vocalists. He currently leads The John Stein Trio, a fine jazz band in which he showcases original compositions along with jazz standards. |

Press Reviews
“Each of John’s solos is a clear statement shorn of non-essentials, rooted in the blues andbebop, and played with an immediately identifiable sound in a distinctly contemporary style. . . John is also a composer of tunes that stick in the listener’s memory even as theychallenge the band. The music John wrote for this session covers a wide range of jazzstyles -- bossa nova, boogaloo, hard bop, odd meter, soul jazz . . . Music this honest, thisdirect, and this lyrical is not easy to make . . . Of course, the true mark of the artistryand craftsmanship of John Stein and his band is that they make it sound easy.” From album notes to "Green Street" by Ed Hazell, Jazz Critic... Reviews of John's Recording 'Green Street':"You'd think elegant guitar/organ jazz must be an oxymoron, but guitarist John Stein brings a deceptive finesse to this familiar greasy soul-jazz sound. Beneath the bold outlines there's infinite detail that you don't often find in the genre. Listen to the stunningly articulated ornaments on his original "Hotcakes," or the Wes Montgomery-style mix of chords, octaves, and single-note phrases in "Booga Lou." On his new "Green Street" (A-Records), guitarist John Stein embodies the best of the guitar/organ/drums trio tradition in jazz -- the funk and grooves that hark back to Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff, with the harmonic sophistication anddulcet-toned swing of Jim Hall." -Jon Garelick, The Boston Phoenix |
