Press Reviews
Finnthomaz first struck me in Ilosaarirock 2002 when an acquaintance bought their demo, Nuclear Necrosummoning, and brought it back to our camp for a listen. As we gathered around the small "boombox" in the extreme heat and under the sun that burned us from a cloudless sky, I could swear I felt a breath from Siberia itself when Necrosummoning's first notes of grim blackness hit the air. In a blink everything went back to status quo, and there I was again, lying exhausted on the ground, sipping on overheated beer.
Now that I listen to the demo at my house, I still reminisce over that momentary relief it granted me. However, as my little story above is hardly a descriptive one (at least musical-wise), I'll go on a bit deeper. As usual, the programmed drums are an annoyance. They do, however, create an atmosphere of cold and sterile industrial environment, which is well supported by the thin, minimalist production. The overall sound somehow resembles the chaos experienced on Dødheimsgard's Satanic Art -ep, which is very much to my liking. Furthermore, the melodies are grim and not overused by many of their teammates.
Priest ov Necrocult's agonizing screech is one of the best vocal performances I've heard in a while. On the other hand, Dark Illusion, the guitarist, needs more practice to gain precision, even if his riffs and leads are enjoyably grim and well balanced with the vocals.
Perhaps the biggest plus with this Finnthomaz is that the band needs practice with the instruments. This might sound somewhat backwards, but I've experienced that most demo bands consisting of skilled musicians have great problems in getting together a personal and interesting sound and style. To conclude, most will be very quick to dismiss the band due to their uncommercial sound of cold industrial black metal. If you, however, have a history of going against the grain with these type of things, check 'em out.
