Press Reviews
The Washington Post -ARTS- Monday, June 22, 1998AT CATHOLIC, a BRAVURA BRAVO in 'BOHEME'By Josheph McLellanSpecial to The Washington Post_____________________________"You can't exactly say that a star was born Friday in Catholic University's Hartke Theatre. Argentine soprano Fabiana Bravo has been around for a while, singing in opera and recitals and winning competitions (most notably the 1995 Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition). Her big, unusually beautiful voice has been known to connoisseurs and her potential was evident. The most exciting news from the Summer Opera Theatre Company's new "La Boheme" is that the voice, bigger and more beautiful than ever, is now also well controlled. Her performance as Mimi in this "Boheme", which will have repeat performances Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, may be the last time we can hear it in an auditorium as intimate as Hartke or at prices as low as Summer Opera's.This does not mean that this "Boheme" is a one-woman show. It is very much an ensemble production, as operas directed by John Lehmeyer usually are, carefully calculated down to the smallest gestures and bringing the performers into synergistic combinations again and again..." |
