Press Reviews
“Ten To Midnight” Shane ForbesThe large number of talented Tableland musicians that have contributed to this set of recordings is testimony to the talented songwriting of Shane Forbes. His seemingly intuitive use of language spans not only musical styles but also delves into the local indigenous dialect songs such as Tagalaka Girl and Munjin’.The set starts with Concrete Boxes in a style very reminiscent of Paul Kelly, helped along by Shane’s distinctive vocals.Tagalaka Girl follows with a hint of Trinidad and a lush treatment in the chorus that makes it instantly accessible. Deliverants features a toe- tapping two/four beat before the almost overwhelming sincerity of Still in Love ensures that somewhere there will be a couple gripping hands under the table , silently promising to try harder! The reggae feel of Natalie has some groovy (can you still use that word?) backup vocals, and leads to the rock of Outlaw, a song with perceptive lyrical imagery that sounds like a really good soundtrack for some sort of”escape or die “ type movie.Ten to Midnight features some brooding guitar work , reeking of seedy dives in darkened streets while Never Comin Back heralds a brassier feel courtesy of the saxaphone of Jay James which dialogues well with the guitar work of Garry Dozier and Ken Divine throughout the next few tracks. Munjin’ has the advantage of being tight and funky as well as being a virtual lexicon of Atherton Tablelands traditional language . It also features some terrific didge playing by Marley Sharp. In short, Shane Forbes’ heartfelt songwriting combined with clever arrangements by Garry Dozier and solid instrumental performances ensure that this is yet another “must have” from the Rocks Teddy studio. |
