Artist History
In February 1992, September's Child frustrated with years of playing the Pittsburgh, Pa. music clubs, decided to put together a plan to show up at colleges and other locations throughout the southeastern U.S. They performed whenever someone would let them. With a small indie label (Trayner Records) helping them, they averaged .85 shows per day, hoping to sell enough merchandise to pay for gas to get to the next show. During the 1992 New Music Seminar in New York City, September's Child carried "Showing up" one step further by playing on TOP OF THEIR BUS (a full size school bus), parked outside the Marriot Marquis to rave reviews. "I work in an office in New York, and I saw this band jamming on a bus and they were awesome!" was the message left on their answering machine by Vicki Goldsmith of MTV. The New York Police Department was not so impressed, shutting down three of the five bus performances during the New Music Seminar. The constant touring of September's Child eventually took its toll on the band. Band members came and went from tour to tour, but the intensity of the band stayed the same. By the end of 1992, the band had logged thousands of miles on it's bus and had played 162 shows at colleges, universities, fraternities, and clubs on the east coast. The band needed a break from touring and decided to move to Minneapolis. Singer/songwriter Jazz recruited Mark Hamm to play guitar. Mark had played guitar in Mr. Salty, a very popular Minneapolis rock band. During this time, the band recorded five songs for it's album "One Of These Days..." After the recording sessions, Jazz and Mark decided to secure a more stable line up. They found Chad Mathern to play drums. Chad had played bass guitar in the Minneapolis band, 5 Guys. His song writing knowledge has helped push the band in new directions, while his drumming ability is the perfect compliment to bassist, Mark Weigel. Mark has been an active part of the Minneapolis underground music scene for years. In June 1998, five new songs were completed and added to the previous material to complete the album, "One Of These Days..." |

Press Reviews
1. September's Child voted best local rock band in readers' choice awards. - City Pages 5/5/99 2. September's Child have enough guitar smarts to make their Goo Goo Doll pop sound more Minneapolis-harsh than you'd expect, and they've got the hooks for the rock overground. - City Pages A List article 1/6/99 3. Watching Mark Hamm of September's Child play guitar solo after guitar solo really made me like guitar solos again. Not only is he good at it, but he looks like the captain of my high school cross country team. September's Child is the brain offspring of Jazz, a former Pittsburghian. "I got this (version of the) band together to do the Replacements tribute show about a year and a half ago. We got a great response from the people in the scene and thought why not keep playing together?" Before Jazz relocated, the Pittsburgh version of September's Child put out a CD called Curiosity Shop. It's good, really sad - love, loss of love. - GIG 4. Referring to the CD release party for "Swingin' Party": ...It's a live recording of a party that they put on in '95 at O'Gara's, with all the tunes being Mats songs. It includes the Glenrustles, Mammy Nuns, Rank Strangers, Cave Music, Vena Cava and more.... It's a very decent attempt at catching the spirit of the music being applauded, as was the party this Friday night at the Turf Club. I was only there for an hour, but was impressed by September's Child (where did they come from?!?!?) and by the size and enthusiasm of the crowd... it was packed!!... - E-NOTE, #59 |
