Artist History
Born and raised in Dublin, Emer began playing the Irish harp at age nine, and studied classical music at the College of Music, Dublin and Trinity College of Music, London. Though harp is her main instrument, Emer is also an accomplished keyboardist and bodhran (Irish frame drum) player. On returning to Dublin, she studied acting and diversified into writing music for theater. She then hooked up with John and started writing the material that formed the basis of her first album. Live television and radio performances attracted considerable attention from both the media and record companies in Ireland and Britain. However Emer chose to sign with Triloka and recorded her debut album Emer Kenny in 1997.Unlike the first album that was recorded in speedy 23 days, the Fades Into Day was recorded over a 12-month period in Kenny and Murphy’s state-of-the-art Pro-Tools home studio. “Even though the studio is separate from our house we practically lived in the studio for a year,” Emer recalls. That luxury of time allowed them to develop Fades Into Day’s fresh and exciting sound which is primarily based on re-sampling live performances, then looping and processing them in a variety of innovative way’s to suit the particular track. These production techniques ensure that the Irish instruments have more than enough 21st century spin to make them both traditionally authentic and scorchingly cutting edge. These more deliberate recording methods have resulted in one of the most transcendent albums in recent memory. Fades Into Day is such a mysterious album, even Emer seems at a loss to describe it. "We didn't intentionally try to write these kind of songs, they just seemed to come out that way," the singer states. Whatever it’s origins, one thing seems certain: Fades Into Day is as pure, honest and beautiful a record as you'll ever hear. Enjoy... |
