Artist History
Born and raised in Providence, RI, Greg Lato’s fondest recollection of singing dates as far back as five years old. His father is a jazz musician, who played for many legendary artists. Growing up in this type of musical environment led Greg to dive into a vast record collection of many different types of music. “I remember strutting around my room with a hairbrush for a microphone,” he shares, “and singing to many of these albums, dreaming that one day I would have one of my own.”
Other than his frequent concerts in front of his family on holidays, he didn’t really get to showcase his talent until high school. Greg decided to be a part of weekly talent shows, which led to him winning first place in mostly all of them. As a result of his success, he started to make a name for himself around town. Greg eventually got the opportunity to perform his own solo concert before graduation, which ended up being sold out. At the end of this concert he got his first standing ovation. “This was one of those moments that I will always treasure. It was at this very instant I decided that I wanted to do this for the rest of my life,” says Greg.
As Greg attended college, he grew a strong fan base in Rhode Island, and sold hundreds of copies of a CD he had recorded. Soon after, he formed a band and toured many clubs in the Rhode Island area to support a new CD he had recorded with the band. This CD also sold many copies in record stores, which led to more fans.
Greg then decided that if he wanted to really make this happen, he had to establish some strong contacts in Los Angeles. In 2001 while in LA, Greg got the opportunity to record his songs with some of the top musicians in the area, and also achieve his goal of finding a manager. This recording resulted in the “Promise to try EP” which went on to sell 5,000 copies locally and on the Internet! During this time, his single ‘Never Let You Down’ was aired on Providence, RI's Coast 93.3’s ‘New Music Download’ to a flood of phone calls.
For most of 2002, Greg worked hard in the studio recording some new material to be reviewed by record companies. The new single titled “Spinning” and two extra songs is set to be released in early 2003. Greg also recently filmed his first music video, which was promoted with a contest and interview on Fun 107. This mixture of pop, rock, dance, and funk is already starting to gain an overwhelmingly positive response from music industry insiders in Los Angeles. It looks like 2003 just might be Greg’s breakthrough year!
