Artist History
Having formed way back in 1995, DesolatioN:
Stu - Guitars, vocals,
Terry - Guitars,
Edd - Drums,
Simon - bass
have grown to become a formidable black/death metal outfit. With 4 members
being present throughout the bands history, and Terry fitting seemlessly into the set-up, DesolatioN is a solid playing unit
with a passion for the music it plays.
'Nemesis', DesolatioN's fourth recording was made at Necrodeath studios with
Irrumator (Anaal Nathrakh, Frost, Mistress) in two days. the four tracks recorded
portray the band's developed song-writing style and unique sound and the balance between
melody and heaviness which has been ever present in DesolatioN's material.
'Nemesis' is available for 5GBP or 7.5USD (+1GBP or 1.5USD for postage outside the UK)

Press Reviews
Cadaverized Zine.
I’m really not a fan of Black Metal, and when I heard Desolation touted as such I have to say I was not enamoured too much with the prospect of listening to this disc all the way through. “Nemesis” proved to be a pleasant surprise however, and certainly cannot be pigeon-holed along with the rest of the Black Metal pack.
Desolation really have one of the broadest spectrums of musical influence I have ever heard, a difficult feat in what is generally a genre with relatively narrow scope for defining an original sound. On opening track “From The Chaos”, vocals range from shredding screams, to a spoken word passage, to *gasp* a rather melodic clean vocal part. There’s even some acoustic guitar going on here. Some of you purists may be reaching for the crucifix and goblet of virgin’s blood as we speak, but as an outside observer to the whole scene I can make an impartial observation on this, and it really is rather good.
Eschewing out and out speed and ferocity for a more melodic approach, and this is in many places more reminiscent of sadly-defunct Swedish legends Edge Of Sanity than the God-bothering likes of Mayhem or Marduk. Production is a lot “warmer” than the tinny sound of such bands, and sounds damn good for a demo.
While the eclectic mix of sounds on “Nemesis” is the band’s main point of interest, at some stages it threatens to be their downfall also. The contained diverse mix of styles occasionally don’t sound “right” next to each other, changing from one style to another with little warning.
Desolation are still at the demo stage as yet though, and a fully developed sound will no doubt come with experience. This disc serves as a showcase for a band willing to experiment with their sound, and shows a mass of potential, with some brilliantly catchy melodic moments. While I still won’t be donning the corpse paint or denouncing Jesus just yet, “Nemesis” is definitely worth a look in, and I await a full-length release with anticipation.

Recorded at Irrumator's Necrodeath studio 'Nemesis' is an ambitious demo, founded in black metal, but encompassing many progressive twists and turns. It is intelligently written/arranged and sometimes brave, like the close harmony acoustic section in 'Oceanis'. The Dani Filth-like vocals of Kev are not to my taste, but with Cradle of Filth being so popular Desolation will appeal to a great number of people. Plenty of gigs are planned, so make sure you catch them.

Live4Metal.com. Review by Steve.
I've no idea where this lot have been hiding the last 7 years, but I'm pretty sure I haven't seen them live and this, their 4th demo is the 1st to make it's way into my sweaty palms. Hailing from darkest Surrey this 4 piece have actually kept the original line-up intact since their inception. Something I'm sure which has helped the band mature, because the 4 tracks here show that the band are now ready to be signed and I'm positive that'll happen quite soon.
I gotta mention the only thing that'll maybe hamper the band. Occasionally the vocals of Kev do veer a little close to Dani Filths. Nothing wrong with that in my book, but you know how fussy some people get. (Hi Marco :-)
So, the bands influences: Well the CoF ones been mentioned already. There's also an underlying sound of traditional Metal hanging around, which is most welcoming to these ears, I'd also wager the band are fans of Fields Of The Nephilim. (Although more in the atmospherics than the actual sound).
Although the blackened sound is most prevalent, "From The Chaos" features spoken passages and clean vocals, "Oceanis" has some nice acoustic segments topped with dual male (clean) vocals. And final track "The Bright Sun Extinguished" has a brooding intro before the blackfest kicks in. Variety keeps the listener interested. A simply theory so many bands manage to completely ignore.
The sound is excellent, which is not surprising as it was recorded at Necrodeath Studios by Irrumator, who it seems is doing his best to get more production credits than Dave Chang of late.
Another quality unsigned UK band to keep your eyes on. |
