Courtesy of WAX MAGAZINE (JAN 2001) and Kingsley Marshall of the Vinyl Network:Drum ‘n’ bass purists look away. As Photek, Justice and Hidden Agenda before them the production team behind Z-No have committed the ultimate crime – daring to take a step beyond the unspoken boundaries that have acted to marginalize and restrict the music for so long.Though describing this collaborative action as electronic, breakbeat skate rock – Blue, Raser and co have in fact created something quite unique – there’s no disguising the Nine Inch Nails influence of the vocal material but ‘Stitch’ matches the quality of Ninja Tunes breakbeat abstraction and ‘Firebreak’ is as furious as the most abstract Paradox production. ‘Lalo’ provides the highlight however, a tribute to the composer behind ‘Bullitt,’ with a tense atmosphere constructed from loping beats, edgy acoustic bass and a big, big brass section. With so many genre twisted up in drum ‘n’ bass it was only a matter of time before something this broad hit the shelves.
