Tingler offers an exciting new sound to the world of popular music, having influences such as Radiohead, Dave Matthews Band, Smashing Pumpkins, and many more. The goal of Tingler is to have no boundaries, to reach every aspect of the musical spectrum, and to touch everyone who listens. The music is emotional and comes from the soul. As of now, the Roach Brothers are interested in a career making music, and will strive to keep creating tasteful, emotional music. Singer/songwriter Billy Roach continues to write and play live in Pennsylvania, and will get his college degree in May. Timmy Roach is attending The Musicians Institute in Hollywood, Ca to continue to tighten his drum skills. Tingler is very serious about their work and their future career in music. Press Reviews
Step Off Dave Matthews, Billy Roach is Doin’ the Hump!By: André GravesIt’s 10:15 p.m. and I have actually arrived early for something. As I sit in a dimly lit corner of the bar and debate tonight’s wing special, I anxiously await this evening’s performance by The Billy Roach Thang. I must admit this I a totally alien experience for me. Here I am, the self-proclaimed expert on all bands not local, about to sit through my first “bar band” show. Well the first time sober anyway. To be totally honest, I’ve become familiar with very few local bands, and even less familiar with their music, in my time here at IUP. The only good local bands that I even know anything about are Teenage Girls and well, Teenage Girls. (Nothing against you other guys, really!) And as far as The Billy Roach Thang was concerned, up until today I thought it was the tattoo guy. At 10:46 the curtain finally goes up and the on-stage performance was composed of Billy Roach, much to my surprise, opened with “Crush” by The Dave Matthews Band, a song I actually know. While its obvious Roach is no Dave, his raw, emotional vocal are still quite impressive. Roach demonstrates his abilities even more so on his latest CD “Closest to the Clouds” which I might add is a sound musical investment. Of the next few numbers they play I only knew one but enjoyed them all nonetheless. Two standouts in particular were Led Zeppelin’s “Tangerine”, which the pair covered excellently, and “Faith” a song penned by Roach himself. Although there were some minor technical difficulties this didn’t dissuade the band in the least nor did it prevent them from putting their best foot forward. Before the next song, Roach gave a brief introduction, which I thought was a joke initially. It is at this point that the show took a surprising turn. Billy asked the audience if we were familiar with “The Humpty Dance”, and of course we all were, they then proceeded with an acoustic version of the popular rap song by Digital Underground. The small crowd, myself included, were not only amused but in awe as well. In fact, they played it so sincerely that if one didn’t know better it would have been possible to mistake it as a real song. They concluded the number by turning it into an old-school hip-hop medley consisting of “Scenario” by A Tribe Called Quest and “Gin & Juice” by Snoop Dogg. After a bathroom break and short conversation with yours truly, The Billy Roach Thang took to the stage again and hit the crowd with some Hendrix. With Chad Vivian on the electric guitar for this song, the duo put an interesting spin on Jimi’s classic “All Along the Watchtower.” The guys then eventually gave into some audience requests one of which was “Margaritaville” by Jimmy Buffet. And as all bar-going college students know; you can’t go wrong with Buffet. One request Roach declined, much to my chagrin, was that of “WU-TANG” which an audience member shouted out. (No it was not I!) For those of you whose television dials frequent MTV, you would have definitely recognized the next song; Filter’s “Take a Picture.” While Roach doesn’t scream his head off like Richard Patrick does on Filter’s version, I really like Billy’s cover, and I give it the thumbs up. As the evening marched on they played some more great covers, like The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and of course, more Dave Matthews. They also did an acoustic remake of Ben E. King’s Stand By Me. Also thrown into the mix were more Billy Roach originals like “Can’t Stop” a heavily Dave Matthews influenced tune, and Acid Blues Trip, which until recently was an instrumental. The lyrics were so new in fact that Roach kept a copy of them on his lap during this song. The guys closed the show with #41 by Dave Matthews Band with the audience looking on in total approval. Over all I feel that The Billy Roach Thang put on a great show and are definitely worth checking out, especially if you are a Dave Matthews fan. With a little polish and a lot of practice, you may see this band giving Mr. Matthews and his friend Timmy a run for their money some day. Take it from a guy who went to the show as a critic and left a fan. |
