Artist History
what started out as a recording project several years back between two former garage-punk fledglings with a knack for a melody and an innate desire to express it, comes the pop collective known as sunshine boy. chris conway (guitar/vocals) and matt miceli (drums) holed themselves up in the comfy confines of their charlestown rehearsal studio to get down to business, pop-style, in the winter of 1996. their goal was to eclipse the sonic endeavors of their previous noise-inclined outfits (not to mention their former bands) by immersing themselves in a near fanatical devotion to recording and editing. the objective was to capture the sonic integrity of the records they adored (beatles, sloan, oasis) within the context of the 4-track/home studio trappings that were afforded to them. simultaneously, they assembled an ever-evolving live version of the band that portrayed an energized, yet not truly representative, facsimile of the recorded efforts. this era of the band culminated in the february 1999 release of their "official" ("official", so as not to discount the countless cassette recordings and subsequent circulation of 30-plus tracks previous to this) debut pop tarts. the double a-sided single of "twenty-second birthday/room 27" garnered significant airplay on commercial, college, and internet radio throughout the boston area and was awarded a spot in the coveted top 20 singles of the year compiled by boston rock literary institution the noise. the dawn of 1999 also saw the emergence of the internal desire for something more substantial, more concrete, and more stable. there's a lot to be said for commitment in this day and age, so the band felt it was time to blend the live with the tape and added ed devlin (bass) to the mix. colleagues and friends for some time, this newly recharged band decided to have a go, and so they did. after a year and a half of cathartic live shows, constant rehearsals, and many more home recordings, the band entered the smallchurch studios in june of 2000 to begin recording what would become the 7-song ep over under sideways down. recorded and mixed by bob logan (vic firecracker) and produced by chris conway, this ep stands as the truest representation of what the band has been hinting at for years: lots of harmonies, an abundance of guitars (acoustic, electric, and otherwise), and tambourines abound. the band feels more comfortable now than ever with the fact that they can (and do) become a different entity when the tape is rolling, and that there's no shame in wearing your influences with a smile. |
