Artist description
Since the release of their debut album “Saintless” in October 2001, SILENCE has received solid support from Canadian media and rock radio. The first two singles – ‘Ruins’ and ‘Spaces’ - along with other tracks from “Saintless”, have been featured at many major rock stations across Canada, and the album has merited critical acclaim in the press. ‘Spaces’ was immediately added into rotation at both Max 104 (Thunder Bay, ON) and CHTM 680 (Thompson, MB), and the video for ‘Spaces’ was featured on MuchMusic’s Indie Spotlight in December. “Saintless” continues to chart at campus stations across the nation, and the band will be embarking on a national tour in the Spring of 2002.
Major highlights for SILENCE in the past year include releasing ‘Ruins’, a 3-song Enhanced CD that has sold over 1200 units to date; self-producing a video for ‘Ruins’ that was featured on MuchMusic’s “Indie Spotlight”, and professionally filming a video for 'Spaces’. Other highlights include performing on CTV’s Canada AM, showcasing at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, performing at the Canada Summer Games, being named Molson Canadian’s online Featured Band two months in a row, and winning an FM96’s Battle of the New Rock on-air contest with 81% of call-in votes.
Growing up in a low-income family of nine children near Goderich, Ontario, the four brothers and sister known as SILENCE share a common desire to make a difference in the world. Formative years of air guitar and pots and pan drumming in the family room paved the way for these self-taught musicians. Melina’s hauntingly melodic vocals can turn on a dime into raw, gut wrenching, unforgettable hooks. They write collectively, with Matt and Melina’s lyrics founded in hope. Fans speak of a ‘feeling’ they get from seeing the band live, describing it as emotionally comparable to a U2 concert.
SILENCE is definitely a ‘live’ band. A lifetime of getting to know each other combined with catchy songwriting and a passion for sharing their music makes for an unforgettable performance. Renowned for their explosive energy, the stage is where they feel most at home.
S.I.L.E.N.C.E. (save innocent lives… endless needs… care endlessly) is the acronymic name for a charitable human aid organization that SILENCE would like to establish. Separate from the band, it is an organization designed to raise money and awareness for those in need. It will be multi-purpose, providing both urgent and sustainable solutions to world issues at both local and global levels.
While there is definitely a more serious side to SILENCE than what is stereotypically found in a modern rock band, there is also a lighthearted one that shines through to balance things out. Ask Manny to teach you ‘The Raptor’ or simply spend some time with the band… once the shyness wears off, you’ll probably find yourself enthralled by these unique and very likeable individuals.
