Artist History
Started at the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1996 by Drama Major T. Ryan Arnold and Art Major Patrick Keller the Kryptransmitter was originally a trip hop band. At the time Patrick was listening to and playing a lot of surf rock, when T. Ryan (a long time synth pop and electronica fan), lent him some of his Bristol Trip Hop CDs. The two agreed that the bands like Portishead, Tricky, and Land of Loops had a sound that was worth exploring. Initially they wanted to give Trip Hop an American slant. They worked on several cuts over the summer of 1996 and through the next year. Eventually the band started to explore a wider range of tones and song styles and spent most of the summer of 1997 recording in a secluded studio in Wells, NV. It was late in 1997 that Patrick decided to focus on Music and in particular Kryptransmitter as a central theme to his art studio works. At this point the band's image changed into a satirical answer to coporate music a la the spice girls. And several song/products were produced culminating in a studio piece complete with Pre-Packeged shrunk wrapped T-Shirts, CD's, and Action Figures. Patrick made a video for the song, "Product", which documented the band's ideas about marketing and music (as well as more than one nod to German inovators Kraftwerk). In 1998 Kryptransmitter played their first concert to a sold out crowd at UCSB's Cambell Hall...with more than 800 people in attendance the band played "live" their score to the Llyr Heller/Kim Chui film "fixed in post". Shortly after the preformance Patrick Keller Left the band as an active member to pursue develop his own music under his own name but remains a contributing member to Kryptransmitter to this day. Kryptransmitter, the band name and direction now under the despotic control of T. Ryan Arnold continues to make dynamic new works with the contribution of several musicians. Based in Los Angeles, Kryptransmitter is producing original works and working on Remixes for various local bands and musicians. |
