Artist description
Browne, an innovative pianist, substituted for Oscar Peterson in an extraordinary television production called, "The Jazz Piano" in 1970, with Erroll Garner, Bill Evans and Marion McPartland. Originally from Montreal, Browne moved to Ottawa when he was 16 years old and took up learning piano on his own. His interest grew, so he went to Berkeley College of Music in Boston to study, then to Oscar Peterson's Advanced School of Contemporary Music in Toronto. The CBC caught sight of the young pianist and gave him the opportunity to host his own network radio show called, 'Adventures in Rhythm' , then the trendy 'Browne Beat Show'. He continued picking up gigs at popular jazz clubs and eventually formed the Brian Browne Trio. In 1963, Browne cut numerous records, starred in four television specials, and was the host of his own radio show in Toronto while directing for three television series. Browne and his brother, Terry Browne (jazz guitarist/bassist) opened a night club in Peterborough, Ontario called Peppers but before too long he was back in Toronto enmeshed in the jazz scene. In 1989, Browne moved to New York City and spent ten years there playing all the hot spots like Knickerbockers, Tramps, and The Village Corner. |
