Artist History
Ben & Aubrey first met at summer camp in 1996. Ben Spivak was thirteen years old and showing early sign of the achievements to come. Day after day he would parch himself on the largest rock overlooking the lake, and play his guitar until his fingers hurt. All of his fellow campers would sit around and enthusiastically request their favourite songs to which Ben would happily oblige. Aubrey's place at this time was as the lead in the camp play. He spent his days effortlessly learning theatrical music, which was later to be performed for over 1000 campers. Aubrey's nights were rather different. When the sun went down he could always be found sitting on the front porch of his cabin, alone, strumming away at his guitar. Night after night the woods echoed to the sounds of Aubrey's music. Upon their arrival home that summer Ben & Aubrey began to collaborate their efforts, and a very unique acoustic/pop sound began to develop. Initially it seemed heavily based on the music of other pop icons such as Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, and Dave Matthews Band. They played together at local concert venues, such as El Mocambo, Comfort Zone, Free Times Café, and the Opera House, packed with their friends and family. As time progressed, Ben & Aubrey's efforts became geared more towards the compositional process. This was perhaps the most fundamental period of development for the duo. Their new music encompassed a catchy unique sound, while incorporating complex compositional and technical musical techniques. After Ben & Aubrey had written a number of songs, they decided it was time to enter the studio and record their first CD, "Lost In Paradise." The recording process was long and enduring taking place over the course of 5 months. Consistently they would show up at the studio, determined to obtain the album's completion, despite many obstacles thrown in their way such as busy schedules, and a reoccurring flu that Ben couldn't seem to heal. The CD was released in March of 1999 and debuted at a release party for an audience of 600 fans. This was an astounding response, as it usually takes a great deal of time to establish a following, however Ben & Aubrey managed to accomplish this rather quickly. It was at this point that they struck the attention of many of the artistry directors at a Toronto-based indie label called "Oxygen Records" who immediately offered Ben & Aubrey a proposal, which was accepted last fall. Now, their fan base continues to grow, and the concerts are packed with audiences who lovingly sing along to Ben & Aubrey's original songs. They have made appearances on the radio and on television shows such as CBC's "Jonovision" and GlobalTV's "Spill Your Guts." |
