BREVARD LIVE MAGAZINE (Covering Central Florida) CD REVIEWS by Chris Long Austin Pettit JUST FOR KICKS 13 Song CD/Avoca Records I've been going to see Austin Pettit perform live in various different groups for many years and I've always thought he was one of the most talented players going. That's why I was especially pleased when I heard he had, what I believe, to be his first solo CD coming out. I also felt privileged to know that I got to check out a copy of this record even before his own band! (Hey, every job has it's perks you know). Anyway, although I always try to be as positive and supportive as possible with my reviews, you must know that when I tell you that this CD is good, I mean it's reeeeal good! I'm talking about good as in one of the best records that have come across my desk since I've been working here. I mean good as in push the repeat button on the CD player and let that sucker go all day kinda good. Are you gettin' the idea? This record has a great combination of rock, blues, and jazz mixed with a little soulful dose of R&B on the side. The reason it sounds so good, is probably due in part to the fact that Austin and Co-Producer, Chuck Dickey really know what they're doing in the studio. Another factor could also be that the guest musicians list on this CD reads like a Who's who of some of my all time favorite players (Buck Barefoot, Debbie Boyer, Randy Crouch, Curt Austin, Dave Fiester... do you see a pattern here?). Also, another reason I liked this record so much is because Austin Pettit is a major badass player and he writes great songs! From the cool blues feel of "Make Up Your Mind" with Dave Vickers on lead vocals, to the Detroit rockin' sounds of "Take Me Back" with my hero Buck Barefoot on lead vocals, this records explores a wide variety of aural colors and textures. However, my absolute favorite track on this CD is the one that Austin himself sings lead on, "I'll Make Do". With a sorta, "Deguello" feel, this down and dirty little chunk-o-blues rock had me howlin'. Any guy that's ever been "taken to the cleaners" in a relationship break up will LOVE this one. I only wish Austin had invited me over for a few beers to help write about 10 more verses to this one.
