Artist History
“In a hundred years, this period of time will be regarded as a true renaissance. Digital technology has significantly lowered the entrance fee for the creative individual to explore art forms that were previously only reserved for the privileged, and to publish the output” --Urban RhythmUrban Rhythm seriously entered the world of music when he randomly picked up Babatunde Olatunji’s Drums of Passion from a street vendor when he was a high school junior. He went on to study with Olatunji in his Harlem drum and dance studio for several years to acquire what Baba calls “the irresistible force of enormous power” that true drumming possesses. He then formed the Mandala Drummers with two of NYC’s best freestyle percussionists and performed throughout the U.S. Shortly after, House Music was fueling warehouse parties and Urban Rhythm quickly became seduced by this new musical form. During the next three years, he performed at dozens of North American raves and events. Loving the self-sufficiency of digital music, he began building his own home studio to take his musical ideas to the next level. Now performing as Urban Rhythm, became an vital part of Brooklyn’s Illbient music scene performing live and releasing several singles on the Amped, Transient and Ion labels. Urban Rhythm has also remixedthe Theme From The X-Files for Elektra Records. Urban Rhythm™ can be heard live in NYC for the monthly Unity Gain, and with the Crooklyn Sound System.
