Artist description
Due largely in part to the kind folks at the cult-deprogramming center in Smyrna, Tennessee, they have disavowed all previous dealings with the music business. The Umbrellas formed in late 1999, bringing their unique brand of trance-like pop psychedelic folk rock to the world. |

Artist History
Biography Tired of flipping burgers and taking orders at White Castle, Jonathan Trebing picked up a guitar at age 14. Immediately, he attracted the attention of local high school girls and boys alike. Meanwhile, Daniel Tashian was enjoying a roast beef and endive sandwich in Brattleboro, Vermont, (the site of his family’s summer home) and writing songs for his upcoming solo album, “American Wind”. Millard Powers and Jonathan Flax were touring heavily on the wedding circuit in Florida when a broken down Ford Econoline was the catalyst for a change meeting. Mechanic and Botanist, James DiGiralamo, just happened to be swimming by. He promptly fixed their van, and identified the mysterious fungus growing inside. He was hired! Somehow, they all wound up in Phoenix, Tashian manufacturing surfboards, Flax riding in an ambulance, Powers and DiGiralamo working as forest rangers and cub scout leaders. Trebing heading up the Phoenix toenail society. The common thread, they all loved Barry Manilow’s “Copa Cabanna”. The band became known as The Umbrellas because on a perfectly clear day, James DiGiralamo showed up carrying a broken umbrella. The scene was so utterly heartbreaking, they felt the only fitting thing tribute would be to name the band. And thus the Umbrellas were born. Bucky Baxter was the latest addition to the band, because of his uncanny ability to supply plentiful cheap whores and championship fighting cocks. The Umbrellas unfortunately all died in a plane crash in 1992, but their ghosts still record and are willing to perform for ridiculous sums of civil war money and vanilla wafers. As individuals their contributions to the music world can be heard on various projects, ranging from a solo release on Elektra Records, to appearances on albums by Patty Griffin, R.E.M., Bob Dylan, to having original compositions airing on ABC. The group includes former members of The Semantics (Geffen), Farmer Not So John (Compass Records). They have formally studied music at some of the finest universities, and one received a Grammy Nomination this year for best engineered non classical album. You are listening to The Umbrellas. |
