Artist History
End of 1996...Eastwood gives up after three years of existence. The band recorded a four tracks ep, "the motocross ep", and a beautiful album "behindthewall", both released on Noise Product and distributed in Switzerland, France, Belgium and Germany, plus many participations to several compilations (Euro 13, 13/2, Five years of fury, Sid'action...), and played about 100 gigs around Europe, consecrated by the "Prix de la Scène" at the Paleo Festival in Nyon, Switzerland.Beginning of 1997... shovel was born as a natural continuation of its elder's hardcore-crossover style, with a new singer (Francisco), a new bass player (Diego), as well as the remaining members of Eastwood, that means Pol (guitars), François (guitars) and Frank (drums). Shovel shows an evolution to some more emotional and dynamic grooves. Guitars experiment some more aggressive and noisier ways as well as band like Quicksand, Fugazi or Helmet. After 6 months of long nights rehearsing, the boys were ready to rock. They shared their first live experience with New-York's heavy rockers HELMET (well, they broke 7 months later, weird... huh ?), and after numerous performances around Switzerland, time had come to visit the mighty David Weber at the studio des Forces Motrices, to record their first four-tracks EP "birth". After a common project with Division Records (a furious split EP with Yverdon's mulletheadz UNFOLD) Shovel hitted the road to kick ass on stage in Switzerland and Europe (Vernier-sur-Rock Festival and a long swiss tour with No One Is Innocent in December...). Following monthes were dedicated to the creations of new song and travelling between France and Switzerland to rock.....During spring '98, bass player Diego decided to leave the band for some professional reasons (god bless him, he was the coolest guy ever !!!!) Diego was quickly replaced by Raph, bass player for a genevan industrial/ambiant band called 7tone. The new line-up did his first gig on the main stage at the Dour Festival (B), opening for Madball and Suicidal Tendencies. July 98 : Shovel flew to Uppsala, a Swedish town, north of Stockholm. During almost four weeks they worked on their first full length album, "latitude 60° low", produced and recorded by Danne Bergstrand, a funny swedish guy, famous for his powerful metal sound (Meshuggah, Stuck Mojo, Strapping Young Lad) and long beard . Shovel wanted to sound warm, and authentic, not far from a live recordin' session...The work was intense and huge, but the challenge was finally taken up. Autumn '99 shovel joined Headstrong Records, a new swiss record company based in Lausanne. Their enthusiasm mixed with a total competence brought a lot of energy and happiness in the band. Together they released "latitude 60° low" in Switzerland (end of January, distributed by EMI) and in France (February, promoted by Wet Lolita Records and distributed by Musidisc). The album was released in April in Spain, Italy, Benelux and Austria. Shovel are playing in Switzerland from February until May, and then they'll be touring for 20 days in France (end of May, beginning of June). After several summer festivals (Belfort-F, Nyon-CH, Avenches-CH ...) they'll hopefully tour elsewhere in Europe to finally enter the year 2000 with their guitars and a lot of noise... |
