Press Reviews
Australian, alternative folkmeister, Jona Byron has been compared to some of the verygreats in music such as Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley and Thom Yorke…….and on hearing the opening track of this 6 track mini album / sampler I could see why…….’Goodbye Blue Monday’ opens like a morphing of snippets from the KLF’s ‘Chill out’ and Jeff Buckley’s ‘Grace’ and builds on a dark, melancholic [without being miserable] country vibe. A poignant vocal melody is almost let down by a performance that is just a bit too lacklustre…..see, what separates people like Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley from everybody else is / was their ability to convey pure emotion on a purely emotional level….the only other vocalist that has come close recently is the amazing Martin Grech……
Stand out track for me is the beautifully understated ‘Goodnight to the Moon’, a piano and a voice can sometimes be all you need to get the message across. Sounding at times like the Penguin Café Orchestra jamming with Crowded House on Valium. Probably the most uplifting track in this collection…..comparatively speaking.
In ‘Swim’, lord Byron does what I wish he had done for the whole album………he performs the song rather than simply singing it……and what a difference it makes…….it completely shifts the focus onto the vocals……makes you feel rather than hear what he’s saying….if you get my drift.
If Jona Byron could perform every song with as much passion, this would be a collection that would surely be on his first major album…….maybe once he’s listened to Martin Grech’s ‘Open Heart Zoo’, it’ll all click into place.
A&R verdict: Jona Byron will be huge…..mark my words!…….he’s a class apart…… high quality music, introspective words, significant production head…he just needs to work on his vocal delivery....4.8/5
