Artist History
Upon your first encounter with the Los Angeles band TADPOLE, it becomes immediately apparent that this is not your average punk pop quartet. This is a band whose music is a catharsis, an emotional outburst heralded in songs that are dynamic in structure, move with hook-driven melodic genius, and hit hard through lyrics that unveil deeply personal experiences with emotive precision. All this is neatly tied up into a power punch that doesn't usually wander over the three-minute mark.
TADPOLE came about because of Mia's personal want for an outlet to display her abilities as a songwriter and at the constant prodding of her fans to front her own band. She decided to listen to both these inner and outer voices and put together a group of talented musicians. Once together, TADPOLE wasted no time in finding the perfect dynamic niche between two musical philosophies--angst-driven drama rock and fun, infectious melody.
In December 2000, TADPOLE released their debut EP Slip Into A Coma on their DIY label Flying Bug. It is distributed nationwide by Disgruntled Music and has received airplay on stations all over the country. TADPOLE has also been known to sometimes emerge from the depths to take the stage as their dark alter-ego BLACK TADPOLE, a Black Sabbath cover band.
TADPOLE¹s experience in the music scene goes well beyond their four years together as a band. Mia has been a well-respected musician in the underground scene since the late eighties, playing in Hole, Bulimia Banquet, Spoon, and Bobsled. Dvin has been with TADPOLE for three years and has also toured and recorded with well-known Olympia band The Need. Judy and Sharon were both most recently in the band Betty Blowtorch, and although they are the band¹s newest members, they are familiar faces to the TADPOLE family. Judy was with the band when they released Slip Into A Coma. She has also been a well-known player on the independent music scene drumming in influential underground bands Bobsled and Borax. Sharon was a part of the initial grouping of TADPOLE, and her past bands include Bobsled, Butt Trumpet and Love Dolls. |

CARBON 14 #19: Tadpole - Slip Into A Coma
(Flying Bug)
I got this tasty little crystalline pop gem from Ames Evil (L.A. roadie extraordinaire) when he was here in Philly on tour with Texas Terri and The Stiff Ones. Tadpole play catchy and moody power pop that will have you running to the dentist with an abscessed sweet tooth after the first listen. Mia Ferraro's subject matter is sometimes heavy and deep with sorta Patti Smith poetic dynamics and a talk/sing/yell vocal style, but the music has a pure pop backbeat and just enough bitter bitchy angst to let you know they aren't just another bubblegum band. - Peter Santa Maria
RAZORCAKE #3
"Blending captivating lyrics, soaring vocals and a steady pummeling of ferocious drumming, crunching guitar and a heartbeat bass, Tadpole are a super-charged dynamo bowling over every kingpin on the block."

GLUE MAGAZINE, January/February 2001:
"TadPoLe ties one on"..
Mia Ferraro doesn't recall ever having stagefright, not even during her earliest musical experiences performing in junior-high symphonic, marching bands and jazz bands. "I feel like I was born doing this," says Ferraro, one of the most respected veterans of LA's underground music scene. That exultation comes across clearly on her bands debut EP Slip Into a Coma (on Flying Bug Records). The six songs contrast cathartic lyrics with catchy guitar hooks and melodies. "I've worked through all these other bands gaining experience and know-how, but throwing my angst in a heavier direction, Ferraro says. "All along the way, I've written these kinds of songs, but never had the chance to put them into the mix. I like the idea of playing a pop song with dynamic rock energy." Ferraro cut her teeth playing in the punk bands Bulimia Banquet, Bobsled, and her own hard-edged band Spoon. She even played guitar for a short time in Hole during what she describes as the group's "third guitar player revolving door" period. "I had these songs and ideas that I needed to get out, " Ferraro recalls. "Getting booted from Hole was a catalyst for that transition from band member to front person." Aside from competent playing by guitarist Jeffrey Wood, bassist Dvin and guest drummer Judy Molish of Betty Blowtorch fame, the CD's strongest asset is Ferraro's powerfully emotive vocals, particularly on the title track, about the loss of her mother. "Singing adds a dimension of emotion that I can't reach with words alone," says Ferraro. "Music is an excellent communication tool for the human race. It helps us cope." (Bob Cantu) |
