    Press Reviews
Southbridge Evening NewsSouthbridge MAA review of "Lost Days" CD by White Cap, a band from South Carolina by Jim Sharp A thread, however thin it may seem, can maintain a link to our past. It can be a source of joy when we give it a gentle tug and find that old friends have never let go of their end of the essential strand. This is a story of steadfast determination, patience, persistence, endurance and above all, talent.First, a brief trip back in time. The year was 1976. Jim Sharp, (now a Southbridge Mass. resident) and his family had moved from his hometown in South Jersey to the heart of South Carolina just a year before. Jim is a drummer and singer. The deep southern culture, flat rural landscape and laid back atmosphere seemed an unlikely setting for the high energy, high caliber musical ensemble that was born there. Yet, right next to a swampy creek in the midst of the rattlesnake occupied farm land arose a partnership of musicians that would come to be known as "White Cap." The name was adopted as the winning submission in a "Name our Band" contest. The contest was aired on the small community radio stationin Hampton South Carolina where Jim worked as an announcer, salesman and janitor. A white capped mountain range was the vision behind the name.If this imagery seems to stretch one's imagination of a band residing in the steaming southern country, the musical style was even more surprising.White Cap has never been your typical Southern Rock band! Now, two decades after Jim left the South, he still performs, teaches drums, operates a recording service and works for Stonebridge Press. White Cap never stopped, never let go of the dream. The band has released it's long awaited first CD "Lost Days" and the thread has pulled old friends together.Make no mistake, this is a rock & roll CD. But at times it sounds almost like an opera of sorts.Raymond Fail is a guitar master. He has been on the rocky rough road as a tractor trailer driver and extensive touring with a country band, living on the tour bus. As much as he liked the independence of being a driver and his stints on the Country Music Stage, Raymond never gave up his dream of reforming White Cap and of "slaying dragons in the castle" with his Fender StratocasterHe kept in touch with singer (and nephew) Roger Padgett and singer bassist, Clark Mitchell. The band was resurrected with the addition of two young newcomers, Chris Herbert on guitar and drummer, Bobby Varnadoe."Lost Days" is a CD full of heartfelt songs about the lives of the band members. The result is great rock and roll. The recording is excellent. The performances are superb. The band's southern heritage comes through. Some phrases sound like Fried chicken and barbecue with Jack Daniels on the side...but there is some dragon slaying going on here too...plenty of lofty, killer licks being fired out of Raymond's axe and some world class singing and solid playing by all band mates.Roger Padgett is a fully developed singer who knows just how much to put in and when to stand back. He is the most southern sounding member of the band when he sings. While he has always been a good singer, he has become even more soulful with the passing years and seems to be in total control of his sound. And speaking of soulfulness, singer, bassist Clark Mitchell has more soul per ounce than anyone I've ever seen or heard on this planet. He and Roger work extremely well together. Some of their high harmonies are nearly beyond belief.Good drumming work by Bobby Varnadoe, with some nice timing shifts that ad interest to the arrangements. Likewise, very competent guitar work by Chris Herbert.I'm proud to have been a former member of The White Cap Band and feel very good about the strength of the "thread" that has held up over time. This MUSIC WILL ROCK YOU! Way to go White Cap!
